Motion detectors - reviews or recommendations?

The more I read the more confused I get about motion detectors.

Is there a good review of motion detectors?

How about a tutorial?

I am trying to figure out how to compare the detection capabilities of different motion detectors especially when approaching head on. Any comments or info?

Any recommendations for wired motion detectors? I have no pets.

Thanks in advance.

The Bosch Blue Line series seems to be extremely popular, but they are indoor motion detectors.

Well, they are indoor until you seal the lens and sides with silicone. I have 3 of them outside (the microwave/PIR ones) and they've been working great for 2 years.

Thanks for the info. I am currently looking at the GE RCR-50, Bosch DS820i/DS835i, Bosch blue line, and Visonic DUO 240.

Does anyone have any information or a link on explaining how an object is detected given the patterns that are listed in the motion detector brochures?

I'm trying to understand why you would use one detector versus another.

in my opinion OPTEX motion sensors are on of the finest in the market, and i have seen a lot of them.
if you have no pets go with an optex dual tech (microwave/infrared)
you will not regret it

well the basic principles for detecting motion is not what you should be concerned about but how those principles are implemented
each manufacturer has their own way of designing their sensor.
what separates each brand is their true capability of 1) successful detection and 2) avoiding false alarms

the last sensor i got from GE claimed to discriminate a german shepherd up to 85 pounds... it simply didnt, no matter how much ge claimed they could.

i got an optex motion that claimed to do the same but for a medion size dog under 18 inches high under 100 pounds, my dog is about 70 pounds but higher than 18 inches

the optex worked, simply because they way the designed it, not only they use a spheric lens but also use something called quad logic, which to me it made perfect sense.
my dog runs and jumps inside the detection area and not a single time this motion capture that motion but if im standing and barely move 2 steps it gets me quick!!!

if you go to their website their brochures explains the concept behind using spherical lens and quad logic.

that should give you a start

I installed two Visonic Duet Dual Tech. motions and using for over one year - no false alarms. I used the optional mounting kit which makes it easier to focus detection area. In addition, the detector is silent (no clicking relay) and the blinking light can be disabled. For one of them, I configured to provide a 60ft. curtain wall of protection. It took a few hours to get the curtain detection working, but the walk test made it pretty foolproof.

I was concerned about false alarms, so this is the reason I paid more than just a PIR. I think the cost is around $60.

There's not much of a difference between the Bosch blue line and 820/835I's, as long as they're both dual-tecs. The main difference is size, the blue lines are huge and slightly ugly compared to the old 835I's. The real difference is the solid state relay (835) vs. a digital (forgot the exact term they stated to me). Performance is equal overall.

I've never been a fan of Optex for motions, I don't think they're attractive at all, but PE beams is another story.
