Multizone Music Setups?

I am curious as to how many people here are using some sort of PC based multizone music setup? I currently use JRMC as the player/database and find it works well. I also use Netremote as the GUI client front end for my touchscreens. Just wondering if someone using CQC, Elve or HSTouch might be doing something similar. If so maybe you could post some screen shots of your skin. Thanks

Running CQC myself, don't have the screens personally yet, still putting the plumbing together; here are some CQC examples from the forums...

This may or may not be what you are looking for, these are screen designs to manage the system. Whether there is separate physical hardware for source and distribution or it is done via sound cards, USB Sound boxes (Like Creative Labs SB USB) this can be accomplished.

I have set up HS to control my zones and about 5 years ago or more would stream internet audio to the master bathroom with an X10 FOB. At the time the event would shut off all the AB8SS zones and crank up the MB zone and stream internet audio.

Today though I do not do any audio zone control with HS but have the AB8SS and Russound CAS44 (also have done similiar with HAI OPII Russound connection) hooked up to HS and do have the HS music plugins (played with them but never really implemented them).

I'm not really good with colors / nor TS design so HS touchscreens are functional but not nice looking (?)

I was using JRMC with NetRemote up until about 2 weeks ago. Homeseer was offering a sweet deal (IMO) to upgrade to HSPro and I got it. HSTouch is included.

I am still playing around with the interface. I like the new screens over NetRemote. I found NetRemote very difficult to design screens - I really wanted to have multizone audio and full lighting automation in one. I found myself simply loading a webpage within NetRemote to control lights - I didn't like that at all. Also, navigating my collection (it's extremely large) was very slow and not easy with NetRemote. Now I am trying to get Homeseer to interface with JRMC and am not having luck loading songs.

I guess we need to get on HST to try and get the JRMC plugin to work better.

Well I think the current plugin needs to be scrapped and someone that actually knows the needs for multizone audio with the ability to browse and search your library needs to be involved. Not a happy camper that I spent the money to upgrade to HSPro.

HomeSeer is a remarkable and reliable Automation program and I've been using for a long time. That being said my biggest disappointment with it comes from the Audio/Video side of control, mostly audio. When they came out with HSTouch I could see the potential and I still can but their Audio plug-ins are very thin, both HomeSeers own and 3rd party efforts. Any of them work fine if you just want to play a playlist, beyond that things get tricky if not impossible for real multi-zone operation with a good user interface.

HomeSeers own Media player Plug-in works well enough if you don't push it too hard. It's not multi-zone but it's also not something you want to let guests play with, if you do guaranteed this will be a mess and you'll have lots of half played songs and many playlists to clean up later.

I swear I'd sell my soul for a good, reliable jukebox player that I can let guests walk up to on a touchscreen, choose a song or two to add to the queue to be played and have it work without having to show people how to add to the playlist, save the playlist and cross your fingers that things won't get screwed up. You know like a jukebox should be able to. Something like this simply does not exist for HSTouch.

For the life of me I don't understand the fascination the authors have with playlists and giant databases, more features than anyone could ever use. They have their place i suppose but the problem ends up being that the music gets lost and becomes second to operation and user interface complexity. If there were a simple folder based jukebox player for HSTouch I'd buy it in a heartbeat at whatever cost.

It's been a while since I've used it, but I'm pretty sure JRMC had a feature that let you let people loose right on the controller in party/dj mode. That'd be through the native interface though. I really considered using it for WHA at one point just because the interaction is pretty impressive - being able to use an eeeTop touchscreen on the end table like the worlds coolest remote control, browsing music, video and photos - which the HTPC hooked up to the TV would then play.

Honestly though I only played a little - so I'm not sure how big any of its weaknesses may be.

Actually it is quite easy to browse my 900 CD library using my Now Playing skin which interfaces with JRMC and supports multi zones. I can search for anything as well as drill down artists, albums, genre or even playlists to quickly generate a new current playlist which then can be saved.

Jon:

I have seen your blog and screenshots, you've done impressive things. I should have added one more paragraph to my post/rant above. It was written in the context of being usable and written for or to take advantage of HSTouch. There are applications that do exactly what I want now, from biggies like JRMC to simple little jukebox plug-ins for GBPVR. It's within HomeSeer and HSTouch that the music and a convenient and robust interface is sorely lacking.
