123, keep in mind that many gated communities are simply that for prestige. SOME feel its a status symbol. not inferring anyone here is that, but its simply true. gates/entries in some communities are more elaborate than the homes in that community giving the impression home owners are more well-to-do than they really are, LOL. all about status for some. regardless, they are common and have the feel of more security.

my place is gated and the whole perimeter fenced, all 500 acres. barbed wire of course but nice posts . the 100 plus cows feel VERY secure and never leave. presitige? if you like cow patties. LOL

i can ride naked on the four wheeler if i want (wont tell you if i have ). so who wants neighbors!?

ps. someday i will figure out how to have cameras and gate openers but its 1000's of feet. a main gate and rear gate. be nice to keep gates locked, have guest pull up, hit a button to speak, i view them thru a cam and click another button to open it. common for communities and rich folk, but i am sure there is a way for common folk like myself to figure it out with some redneck engineering.

Next time you watch the National Geographic Channel and see the early civilizations that carved their shelters into cliff faces, think, gated community. Only difference, no Home Owner Association fees.

I live in Montreal and "gated community" is a foreign concept to me. I can't pretend to truly understand the mindset of people living in an enclave. I can guess a "gated community" suggests greater security by virtue of exclusion. Having an "owner's association" indicates a desire for a local government that accurately reflects the community's values. So, yeah, it's puzzling to learn that people living together, wary of external threats, wouldn't want video surveillance of the main gate.

On the flip side, if I lived in a gated community I'd be asking myself "400 years of progress yet my community is still built like Jamestown?". I'm guessing people don't *want* to live in gated communities but believe they *need* to due to perceived threats (or simply the nicest homes are there). Any additional security measures that record my activities, so close to home, is asking a bit too much.

FWIW, I'd have supported your proposal.

Too many NLF'ers making it rain? Of course, I was oversimplifying things. There is a pervasive culture of fear here, but in some sense, it's justified considering the number of gun deaths this country has. All I really want to do at this point is protect my one little corner from ever being violated again.

Well, I'd like to brag that Montreal, with a population of just under 2 million (http://www.santemontreal.qc.ca/En/population/etat.html), has a very low murder rate (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2006/01/03/qc-crime20060103.html) but we have other social ills that disqualify us from being Canada's best place to live for families (http://www.todaysparent.com/lifeasparent/parenting/article.jsp?content=3304).

Canadians share many of the same social problems our American neighbours face ... basically because the people contributing to the problems are motivated by the same factors (fast money, quick power, addiction, etc). The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms doesn't enshrine the right to "bear arms" so we don't have the means to decisively end all arguments ... with a bullet. That's probably a good thing because road-rage alone would quadruple Montreal's murder rate.

Depending on the number of entrances/exits you should be able to pull off plate capture on the somewhat cheap. Most do wifi to reduce wiring costs as wiring would cost quite a bit.

If it's gated its like a no brainer.


As was also mentioned this doesn't provide fool proof security but if it's kids they are probably driving their own personal car or their parents. If it's older people the plates will probably return to stolen cars or stolen plates.
