That's a bit like asking what smart phone is right for you. It's not a simple or short answer, and more depends on you than on what is out there.

I would suggest, as a first step, you look at the Technology comparison spreadsheet, and see what the various lighting systems offer. Then you might be able to rule some out, and then get input on the other ones.

I just replied back to a similar question on AVS Forum, so you might want to check it out.

I haven't added any lighting system to my setup. For a long time I thought I would go with the OnQ ALC system, but I have been leaning towards using the Centralite Jetstream system now. It seems to be more flexible and Centralite is still adding new devices to the line (including new 1000w dimmers and a motion detector just in the last month or so). OnQ on the other hand, seems to have long ago stopped concentrating on the ALC line for other lines.

Use something hard-wired if you can.

You can always switch to a powerline or RF solution later (or add one of these solutions to an existing hardwired setup).

If you want to spend a fortune, go with Lutron HomeWorks 8 series, hardwired, if open to studs. HomeWorks 4 Series is slightly less expensive and less 'invasive' (high voltage loads not home run). New HomeWorks hardwired systems being released late winter/early spring. Difficult to DIY, but not impossible (search for Herdfan's posts).

Put your hands on the switches and keypads, before deciding, to get a feel for quality and finish. I think Lutron Maestro switches are all the same (automated and nonautomated) - you can just look at them at Home Depot/Lowes.

If someone else is doing the wiring, then talk to a few installers.

I agree, hardwired switches/keypads probably better than powerline or RF, but not necessarily. I'm not familiar with all of the hardwired systems. ALC seems to be the most popular DIY hardwired solution, here at cocoontech.

And welcome.
