Newby M1XEP and M1 Setup

Hi everyone,

I purchased my M1 about 3 weeks ago and have slowly been attempting to get it up and running. Now I have the XSP plugged in and connected to both the serial cable and Ethernet cable however I can't even see the XSP on my router when I go to look for all devices on my network. I have both the amber and blinking green activity lights on my XSP, but when I am in ELKRP and go to "Find" my XSP, nothing appears. I have rebooted my Elk, replaced the Ethernet cable, reset the Serial Cable and rebooted the XSP.

Can someone please help me?

Update: Sorry for the annoying post. I was able to finally get the XEP Connected.

I am sure I will have more questions later.

Well, the ElkRP software wouldn't "Find" the XEP, but I went onto the admin portion of my FIOS router and found the assigned DHCP IP address by watching the XEP come online. I then put that address in the ElkRP software and it connected. (I actually even heard the ELKM1 click as it connected)

As far as installing the system yourself, the manual is not exactly written for the layman, but I have struggled through it. The biggest sticking points for me have been understanding how all of the parts fit together. Once I understood the big picture and what an EOL resistor was, I get it now...mostly.

I am still having trouble with my wireless expander but I have a feeling this is due to a bad cable that i constructed and haven't tested yet.

I also need to connect other things like the siren, strobe, speaker, and all of the wireless zones, but I think i understand it now that I have the ElkRP software up and running.

For me, running all of the panel wires and wired smokes is going to take the most amount of time.

I think I have the exact same problem/symptoms as Winston described in his first post in this thread regarding not finding the XEP. The exception is that so far I can't fix the problem like Winston did because I'm not noticing anywhere in my Linksys WRT54GL router menus that show which DHCP addresses have been given out.

My Elk system was purchased middle of the year, I am on Windows 7, running the latest/recently installed version of ElkRP2.

Per the troubleshooting guide I made sure the serial baud rate was 115200, I've used the JP2 jumper to try both DHCP and Static IP modes (and while static, set up port forwarding to the PC's static IP address for ports 2362 and 2601).

I'm a newbie at this and have tried everything I can think of. Help is much appreciated.

Have you tried replacing the Ethernet cable? I know it sounds stupid, but you would be surprised how many times this ends up being the issue.

Yeah, advice like that can sometimes be taken the wrong way.. But guess what? You solved my problem . I'm working on erecting a statue in your honor as I type this...

I tried changing cables a few minutes ago and for the first time.. The XEP was found! But then I tried re-using the old cable, and I STILL had success. I know I've pulled and reinstalled the cable (and even different cables in its place) throughout the process and checked the data/status led's for connectivity/traffic, so I can only guess that at this point the config was finally "good" and the process of disconnecting and reconnecting the cable was the last needed step. Maybe it forced a DHCP address assignment that hadn't happened previously? Well at this point I don't care about the why.. Instead I find myself with a gi-normous list of Elk options to tinker with. Time to get the Elk and Centralite talking soon, and creating my first automation fun
