I bought an Elk M1G a couple of years ago. Due to moving, I didn't get around to installing it until recently. Unfortunately, the PLC 2414S that came with it appears to be bad and is of course out of warranty. I am unable to get the Elk to do anything with it and the smarthome salad downloader could not find it. Is there any definitive way I can find out if this is bad, or better yet, perhaps even fix a common problem?

The 2414S is a serial type.
I believe when SDM3 runs it defaults to the USB type; untill told to use the Comm Port once.
One of the free tools can redirect it.
I use Ken Millers SetSHPort program to do it. You can do it directly through SDM3.
If the ELK doesn't use SDM3 then I have no other thoughts.

Correct, the Elk doesn't use SDM3, so the Elk should have no trouble "finding" the PLC. But troubleshooting from the Elk side is really tough.
I have never used the SH salad downloader (I let PowerHome do that for me, if needed).
I would suggest Ken Millers program (as BLM suggested) or open SDM3 and blindly type "DM" and it should open a command window. in that command window, type "port=com3" or whatever port number you are using. then type "isresponding" to see if the PLC replies.
Thanks for the help, guys. PowerHome wasn't able to see it, nor did SDM. "isresponding" had no response on any port.
I did try holding the reset button down for about 10 seconds, figuring that was probably the way to reinitialize it. Nothing so far has helped. I guess I'll need to try another cable and if that doesn't work, it's probably bad.

Also try to see if the gold pins in the RJ-45 connection are bent up enough to make a connection when the plug is in. I had an issue where I had to use a miniature hook made from a cork board push pin to gently lift the pins up so that they would make a connection. Make sure they stay in the proper slot in the connector. Bend them up and then re-align them. See if that works

I did a continuity test on the cable and it seems OK, so that's not the issue. I also did the reset as xlurkr suggested. No luck there. The next thing to try is to raise the pins--they seems OK but I'll raise them up a bit just to be sure. If that doesn't work, it seems that I may be out of luck.
Raising the pins didn't help. I also took it apart to see if there were any obvious manufacturing defects and I can't see anything wrong to the naked eye. There were some pins in there (labeled J1, I think) so unless there are supposed to be jumpered or something I guess I'm out of luck. Bummer.

make sure it is plugged in all the way, I had to use an elastic to give it some pressure into the jack with my old PLC
