Rain8 or Not?

If you are going to acquire something that can provide the timer function such as the HAI for Rain8UPB or Creston for Rain8Net then you can start your automation earlier. In the UPB case you will want to use the Rain8UPB Pro because the firmware on the standard model will fail if you have other UPB traffic. If you do not yet have a clear automation path I still recommend a simple timer that any installer will be able to install and test. When you start automating your irrigation then your primary consideration should be what your automation objectives are. If you are concerned with minimizing water use then the timer provided by HAI or most other controllers will do no better than what a non-automated system will provide. You will want something that controls based upon environmental or soil conditions rather than some periodic timer. It all depends upon what you expect out of automation. For some all that is desired is remote control via internet. For some it is just an easier user interface to change the timer settings.

If you happen to be in a place such as those posting above in Florida you need to consider what you are going to do about the wire you are running underground what will make a nice easy path into your controller electronics. The PRO version of the Rain8 hardware is more immune than the standard version. I do not know if JR is still in business, but he does provide a front end for this via TManufacturing.

I purchased a Rain8Pro RS-232 that I am installing in carport inside 14†structured media box. I am hoping to integrate with Elk M1XSP wired (RS-485) from carport back to wiring closet. The Rain8 ASCII protocol programming instructions for HAI should also be applicable to ElkRP. I went with Rain8Pro because it has on/off buttons, lightning protection, and expansion capabilities as opposed to using M1XOV solid state relays. The Rain8Pro costs more than M1XOV solution though.

In addition, the Rain8Pro can be hooked up to rain sensor or flow meter. The Elk integration should allow the sprinkler to be remotely controlled by a cellphone.

One of the benefits of the automation router is sitting at as computer and making adjustments. Also you can look at all the programming at once rather than flipping a knob in the hot sun and trying to remember what was when. I think the interface for the programmer is a benefit.

Stay away from any of the rain8upb's - I tried them for over a year and nothing but trouble. The serial one's worked OK. I use elk relays now - switch 24V AC transformers via the elk - works like a charm!

My opinion is the opposite. I installed a Rain8UPB over two years ago and have not had to touch it since. I've recently changed controllers from HomeVision to an OmniPro II and still didn't need to touch it.

One difference is that you have one. I had to control 29 valves, so I had 4 of them. I also monitored the actual water usage via the inbuilt counter - this also generated additional traffic while watering.
The non pro versions are confirmed to have firmware bugs that cause them to fail when there is a lot of UPB traffic on the line. Even with the Pro, I had sprinklers coming on when they should not have - big water bills when they are on for 12 hours at a time.
I also have 10 simply automated UPD switches installed for lighting.

Hi Guys

If you have a H.A. Controller and need to control lots of zones and your handy with a soldering iron maybe consider using Gerry Dupreys Sprinkler Controller...

I built a 10 zone version for my Vegie patch and it works great...had no issues to date ,currently controlling it via Homevision...

Im also using Homevision via i/o ports tp control my Garden bed irrigation system...
