I am fairly new to this forum so forgive me if I am not following rules but I am considering using an Elk M1 with the ELK-M1KAM for our access control in the office. It looks like the maximum number of doors we could provide access control is 16 which is a little limiting. I am new to home automation and I know little to nothing about the Elk products. I am looking for a vendor who is reasonably priced which is always important but also one that is willing to provide support as it comes up. If anyone here has any experience with the ELK-M1KAM please let me know.

Thanks for all the helpful advice!

I have been impressed by Martin and the time he spends trying to help people. I became familiar with his company (Automated Outlet) through this site and purchase my Elk equipment from them. I have found Automated Outlet to be helpful, responsive, and a friend to the home automation crowd. You might consider contacting them to discuss your application.

Spanky, the Chief Engineer of Elk Products is very active on this site and spends a lot of time helping people, another good reason for using Elk products.

Their are many other good folks on this site that can offer a wealth of information and ideas.

Hi Neil,

Yes we use the Elk. In the last 60 days we have installed door acces in 3 smaller office locations along with Security, and some simple lighting control. It has worked very well on the smaller applications. Also Automated Outlet is a good vendor in our opinion.

I also recommend Automated Outlet. Can't ask for better service or a nicer guy.

If you want a good advice, stay AWAY from www.YouAutomateIt.com ;)

I got screwed with an aprilaire 8870 that was listed on on ebay last fall... I paid for it and never received it...

I should of bought it from a reliable vendor instead of trying to save 40$ and getting screwed!!

The M1 works good as a small access control system. Ness Security has developed a PC software program for easily administering the access user codes. This program is currently in beta testing.

We use the M1 as the access controller for the ELK facility. There are three employee entrances and we use about 150 prox cards and iButtons.

We place the prox readers at hip height so that employees can put the card in their bill fold or pocket book and it can be read by quickly moving close to the reader without taking the card out. We jokingly tell new people as we take them aroung the building and swing our hip up to the reader, that this is the new access control "butt sniffer". ;)

At our office we call it "wall humping". haha, isn't technology great?

First of all, thanks to everyone for the kind words!

Yes, we use our Elk here for access control as well for the rear entrance door. On that door we have a Mag lock and a Rosslaire reader on the outside of the door. Works great.
