Remote control for Elk M1?

Is there anyway to interface a remote control (something like basic TV type IR remote) with an M1 system, so I can write rules to do things based on certain buttons?

Thanks!

Edit: Thought about it a little more and I would first look at the Ocelot. A few people here have used them and may be of assistance.

I would think you could use a Global Cache and hook it up to a M1XSP. The other option which would be more expensive but may offer benefit in the long run would be to use a home theater control system like the Universal Remote Control MSC-400 with one of their Narrow Band remotes (MX-850, MX-900 etc...) or From RTI you could use an RP-6 rf receiver and one of their remotes.

Hope this helps.

You could also add a wireless card (Elk or GE Caddx) and use the key fob remote. Not IR based and not the usual TV remote interface, but it lets you write rules based upon buttons. You could also use an Elk XSP, a W800 and an X-10 RF PalmPad.

You could run Girder and then have it run tasks on the M1. It would be a pretty cheap interface between your remote and the M1. Later you could run Netremote and design touch screens to talk to Girder and then do some nice stuff.

Of course you could use a PC in the mix with automation software to capture the IR and send to the ELK. Might not be what you are looking for, but another option.

From the crude but effective department... I have an X10 IR receiver next to my television that I point at with a Harmony remote (wouldnt think of using anything else to control my tv). The Elk is programmed to respond to the X10 commands by running automation tasks. I find X10 pretty unreliable when I need it to do something when Im not there to see that it's done (I use UPB for lighting). But as a way to tell the system to do something when I can observe the effect, I find it quite useful.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm looking for something cheap and easy, so the x10 may fit the bill. If I get super ambitious I may build something that closes a relay on an IR command and interfacing the relay to an Elk zone.
