Schlage announces first Z-Wave deadbolts and locks

Squintz, in that example, you would be better off just opening your garage door remotely. Many Cocooners already have control of their garage door, and it is much cheaper.

Simple keypad for the garage door would be the easiest, cheap and easy to install.
But then we wouldn't be using any HA if we thought like that.

Couldn't you also automatically disarm your security once you enter the correct key sequence to get into the house. Now you don't need to do this once you get into the house.

I think my absolute only interest in this would be the ability to poll the locked/unlock status, and remotely and/or programatticaly lock the doors - and for that, I'm actually pretty interested, but it sounds like these are over-priced and really just impractical to put on all the exterior doors - not to mention, way too big.

Lose the keypad so it looks like a standard lock from outside the house, maybe just a hair bigger on the in-side - and make it not require their specific programmers and access points - and if it were reasonably priced, I'd be all over it.

As it stands now, if we're desperate to get in, we can always call in or use the iphone to open the garage door... or worst case, use the lock-box that's stashed outside - and disarm the alarm when we get inside.

I'll be at ISC east next week in NYC. Anyone else going? Hopefully they'll have a demo...

I just read a post on another forum... Someone said the following about z-wave (based on a convo with a Zensys engineer - Maker of z-wave):

"Flooding can be an issue not because of conflicting HomeID's but because of time delays. If the Z-Wave chip is rebroadcasting serveral messages from several devices, Actual commands will take some time to relay. It is also not secure. Someone can select the same HomeID (on purpose) and screw with your system.

Zensys is aware of this problem and has built the Z-Wave v4 chip that has built-in encryption. This new encryption will secure the network, and prevent broadcasting of other systems."

What are your thoughts? Does this schalge product have the v4 chip?
