Security Panel & Electric Panel

Does anybody use the same wiring closet for both security panel (M1G) & Electrical Panel? If so any problems? I currently have mine right next to each other and haven't had any problems that I am aware of. Almost everything is hardwired in my case except for the zwave lighting. Anyhow, I am wondering if before I keeping on adding things to the set up should I consider relocating the security panel. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Mike

I generally put them in the same area, not always side by side necessarily but close. It just seems to be the logical place when wiring things to start with. I've not had a problem with the two panels being in the same area yet.

Same here, I have had them close together on several occasions but always with wired systems. I am adding an M1 RFX2G to one of these systems soon and am a little concerned about RF interference. I will try to remember to report back if I run into trouble.

You know what they say..."If it ain't broke...."

No worries! You can mount the M1RFX2G far away from the Elk M1G since it runs off of the RS-485 Data bus and not from the special auxillary connector like the GE NX-548E would.

Just curious why you would be putting an RFX2G anywhere near your M1 let alone next to an AC panel? I thought the whole point of having a receiver that ran off the keypad bus was to get it into a location that was optimal for RF reception? My M1 is in the process of being installed in the basement and I plan to have 1 or 2 RFX2Gs on the 3rd floor. It never even occurred to me to install a wireless receiver next to the panel.

Unfortunately, there is no way to get the RFX2G far away from the panel. There is a keypad in the master bedroom which I could wire it to but I don't think they want the RFX2G on the wall in their bedroom. This house has scissor trusses so there is no attic and the basement is finished, virtually no way to retrofit without making a lot of holes in a brand new house. On pre-wires I now always pull a cat5e to a central closet for just this reason.

I should be able to get the actual receiver at least 10 feet from the panels and that is what is called for in the ELK documentation so I think it will be fine, otherwise they'll have some new art with pretty blinking lights in their bedroom.

Could it go in the closet in the bedroom?

No, the other side of the wall is the stairway but thanks for the suggestion. If I get really desperate I could possibly convert one of the cat5e cables from the structured wiring to the 485 bus. There is a conduit from the ELK enclosure to the structured wiring panel so I do have options when I think about it.

Back to the question of the OP I am curious if the AC service panel will cause problems anyway. I will thoroughly test and report back any issues I have.

I didn't intend to hijack the thread, I was only sharing my situation to help the OP with his question. I guess if nothing else, it's clear there are always people here with ideas for ways around things and are will to share, thanks.
