Shopping List

Way back when, I posted a shopping list to audit... Well stupid me.. I still haven't bought anything.

Here is the list i've combined, I want to make sure I don't need anything extra that I am missing.... And also, I have a few questions at the end.

What QTY
Elk M1 Gold 1
Elk M1XEP (Ethernet Expander) (What do i use this for?) 1
Elk Strobe Light 2
Elk Keypad (ELK-M1KP) 1
Stubby Reed Switch (door monitor) 3
Garage Door Sensor 1
4 Wire Carbon Monoxide Detector 2
4 Wire Smoke Detector 4
Glassbreak Sensor 3
HAI Two-Way Cellular Communication Center 1
ELK Products, Flush Mount Interior Speaker, 12 Watt 2
Elk RF Receiver 2
Elk LED Arming Station 1
Wireless Smoke Detector 1
Wireless PIR Motion 1
Yellow Jackets 1
Elk Navigator 3.5" Touchscreen 1

In my previous adit post someone mentioned getting an additional battery due to having smoke detectors. What battery should I get?

I want to use the Wireless smoke and PIR detectors in a storage shed that is 50' off the corner of my house. I intend to put the wireless receiver in that far corner of the house, is this wise?

Any other advise, input, tips, cursing, etc?

Thank you again for your help!

All sounds reasonable. Having three different styles of keypad to interact with the system would annoy me though.

With smoke detectors your supposed to get your battery level up to where it'll support 24 hours; out of the box I believe it's good for about 8 - depends on how much you load it up.

The M1XEP is what connects your M1 to a network - so you can access it and program it over the network; get access to the web; control with other software options, etc.

Well my reply I posted earlier didn't go through...

Reason for three different keypads: The one that comes in the kit will go at the front door - which is the primary entrance door. The arming station will go at the house-to-garage door which will be rarely used, but is needed, and I can't fit a keypad in that area. And lastly, the touchpad will go in the MBR. I can't afford two touchpads (they are pricey, but nice).

Will I need anything additional to have multiple keypads installed on the system?

Also, will I need anything additionaly to have multiple sirens hooked up? I like the "GE Screamers" and want a couple of those on the inside of the house, and then I want an exterior siren as well.

I appreciate your help!

Since this is a good sized order, definitely talk to a reseller before you just buy online... I know AutomatedOutlet has been known to make some package deals - might help you afford more toys!

The GE Screamers are awesome - I use them - they'll make the inside of your house almost unbearable, and consume very little current. You can use these on Output 3 otherwise you'll need to add another relay or relay board. Per your order below, Out 1 would be your interior speakers; Out2 is your exterior speaker or siren; and output 3 is open - you'll most likely want to use that for your strobes... that means for the screamer, you need to add either a full relay board (XOVR), add an M1RB Relay board to the onboard voltage outputs, or just add a single relay to one of the outputs - depends on future expansion plans. I also only trigger the screamers if alarm condition is in Away mode - don't wanna ruin the kids' eardrums if they're home.

For the keypads, they're all just part of the M1's databus so nothing special there... I see you've omitted the M1DBH Databus Hub... while it's true that it's absolutely not required, just about every DIY'er uses it because it simplifies life. DELInstallations always suggests not using it, but I believe everyone else around here would recommend it. It makes installation, troubleshooting, and future expansion much easier.

Also - purely personal opinion, but what lead you to the HAI Cellular communicator? From what I've seen the best deal seems to be the uplink anywhere that can connect via serial to the M1 - it seems to do the best job communicating back to the M1 real status and problems. The C3 seems like a good option too - especially if you prefer the prepaid GSM route - again, just curious.

Work2play:

I chose that one based on reviews on here and it's ease of the fact that it just plugs into the POTS line for the elk. From what I understand of it I just pull the sim card out I'd a phone I have on my family plan already that isn't getting used.

With the uplink anywhere you recommended what else would I need to get to use it? You mentioned it connects via serial... Also, where could I find that device at? Could you post a link to it?

Thank you!

Well I finally pulled the trigger! I would up buying quite a bit more than was on my "shopping list". I called Automated Outlet, and sure enough, their phone pricing was better than their internet pricing!!! I would, and will highly recomend them to anyone!!! Very polite, and honest! If the salesman didn't know something he didn't lie to me and say he did... And then he went and found the answer!

One thing im not sure how to proceed with though is the fact that he talked me out of going with Insteon for automation, and recomended I go with UPB, however, it looks to me UPB is substantially higher priced than Insteon, but appear to work the same to me... Can anyone shed some light on the real difference?

Thank you!

I thought for sure I left a response yesterday... but then again, I'm losing my mind bit by bit these days...

For lighting, I like UPB... Check my signature for all my documented relevant information. Insteon is SmartHome - that's all the reason I need to avoid them like the plague.

I did exactly this and am very happy with the results - out1=interior / out2=siren (converted to speaker) / out3=strobe and then single relays for the screamers (only in away mode) and garage door.
You listed a quantity of (2) for the strobes and you want a siren as well - did you purchase a 2nd power supply?

Agree again. I have no issues with wiring anything, but chose the DBH for simplicity and troubleshooting issues; which I needed to do soon after installing everything.

You made an excellent choice!
Their support and sales staff are awesome. They've helped me with small bumps in the road and even got me items they don't normally stock!

Video321:

I did purchase a second power supply.... I purchased: ELK-P624, ELK TRG1640 and ELK1280. Im not sure how they will all hook together, but that's what I got.

Can you shed any light to that?

Thanks!
