SmartHome announces new INSTEON product line

Interesting.

As far as 2-way status, the description doesn't say that it automatically reports status but it says it can be polled:

Status Confirmation
You can poll the status of ICON Dimmer Switch for an instant status report, including brightness level. This feature is essential when you need to know if the device being controlled is on or off, especially when you are controlling it via the web or telephone.

I was looking at the comparisons they have and the relay switch seems to be a great bargain. If you are not using a lot of scenes, aside from a slightly lower load, there is not much difference.

On the dimmer there is much more (the light bars, ramp rates, etc).

Given that, I may just consider using them in the garage and some other spots that might have been a lower priority. Seems like a smart move, gives them a high end and a 'low-end' product.

Oh, and I noticed the usb controller is being released (with software).

OK, just got off of a long call with SH. Here's the scope:

1) Yes, the do provide real 2-way X10 status

The limitations vs. the other switches are:

1) 300 Watts for the dimmer, 400 Watts for the relay switch

2) single green LED with no indication of dim level

3) No X10 scene capability. 30 Insteon scenes vs. 417 with the regular switches

4) White switches only

5) No settable ramp rates (.1 seconds is only rate available)

6) 1 Year warranty instead of 2

P.S. - We'll have them on the site tonight and have them available for shipping early next week.

Martin. Let us know when you hook one of these babies up. Curious as to you 2-way post a few up.

Not CURRENTLY interested in the insteon part, but as an inexpensive x10...maybe

justonemore,

Will do. Look at my post right above yours (perhaps you were typing while I was). The Smarthome people told be that it really did 2-way x10. I'll test them when they come in.

Yes. Insteon, UPB, ZWave and ZigBee are all inherently Two-way. None of these protocols work otherwise.

As far as whether they report status when switched manually, they all do except for ZWave light switches (because of the patent problem).

The status reporting is what I meant, I thought maybe they made it poll only to save on some components or something.

Just received 2 ICON dimmers and 2 ICON Relay's. Although their announcement and web site says 300w load for the dimmers, both ICON dimmers I received today are marked otherwise.

The front face of the upper metal mounting wings are stamped 600W and the paper ICON label on the back states "max. 600W load".

Label and stamping error? Or perhaps the electronics are a Switchlinc v2 with the lightpipes left out and firmware just omitting ramp rate, etc. ???

bmil,

Do the ICON switches have an X10 mode?

The Smarthome wed page page just states INSTEON compatible, no mention of X10.

Edit: Just reread Martin's post from Dec 14, I think that was my answer, however, since you have them in hand...............?

hi bmil, welcome to CocoonTech!

600W would be great news, hopefully someone can confirm this.

So are there any INSTEON switches which can handle over 600W of lighting? The current relay switches apparently handle less than the dimmers when it comes to incandescent lighting.
