I think easier integration between products would be greatly beneficial.
I have an Elk M1 that is interfacing with my ZWave system. From a hardware standpoint this requires the M1XSLZW and the VRCOP (would be NICE if it were a single unit). The setup is not exactly simple; there are a number of steps that have to be performed to add a device to the network, update the controller, add it to Elk, etc. It's not something that is easy and straightforward to do. Until it gets easier I don't think it's going to be widespread.
