Thermostat Placement

Well we've been in the house over a year and most of the kinks have been worked out. The wife mentioned the other day that the house seemed cold especially at night. I took a look at the temperature logging and saw that if anything the stat temperature was slightly higher than expected and the room temps were slightly lower than expected.

Sort of figured that can't be...

Turns out that at night there is a set back that drops the set point a bit and causes the furnace to not run for several hours... AND guess what is right behind the stat? The media closet's power supplies routers, firewalls and PC... totally skewing the stat temp when there is no airflow in the house.

The best of plans....

I have a similar situation with a thermostat on the wall of our theater room media closet. Luckily it only controls the heat/AC in that room, so we're aware of the temp differential. We're also not in that room often enough for it to be a major issue.

When I was designing our home, I used a program called Chief Architect. The program allows you to render 3D images of the home and rooms. In addition, you can cast accurate shadows and sunlight based on the time of day/year and orientation of the house. One of the things I checked in our Master Suite was whether the sun would shine on the locations I was considering for stat placement. Turns out the original location would have had the sun shining on it for part of the year, so I relocated it before having problems.

I just realized my T-Stat is on the wall that has the stairs to the basement on the other side....the wall is insulated and the basement itself is insulated as well...should i be concerned?

Wow...that chief architect program is wayy expensive....like $2k.

We use cadd at work....but 3D in cadd is a bit of a chore..

I wish I have that kind of money to throw away at. Not worth getting Chief Architect unless I can get the most out of it for my money...

But anyway, good thing to know about thermostat placement when it comes to building my own dream home.
