Typical burglar?

Seems pretty clear they'll cut every wire they find out there.

on the contrary, when my house was burglarized, they only cut the phone line. The cable line was not cut, and I was notified via email. Don't assume these are the smartest people ever.

I'm pretty sure the typical burglary they do not cut any wires and simply walk in through an unlocked from door.

I'm serious, unlocked front door is way up on the list.

Well, under the assumption they can't identify cat5 wire, you should take a white wire and write "phone" all down it with a black sharpie and put that out there.

I am going to write a note in my outside phone box: Installer please disconnect alarm first, Disconnecting phone line sends cellular signal immediately.

Then one of these days I will set it up like that, right after I get a cellular backup.

My phone comes from the coax in front of the house, I am hoping they dont scope it out if I do get cased.

I had my incoming phone lines buried and the NID placed in my basement when my house was built. Just slid the boys a few $$. Worked well until they installed FIOS. Unfortunately when you get FIOS, they move any phone lines on existing copper to the FIOS NID. I could not talk them out of it. That was a bummer. Also the battery in most FIOS NIDS only last 4-8 hours. So if you loose power, you loose monitoring after your battery runs out. That is a super bummer.

I like the ideas of putting a channel on the side of the house. This makes it harder for them to get at it. When I was a dumb kid and did dumb stuff, I was lazy, and I have learned kids are still lazy. So unless you get the crafty old fart who is sober and thinking all this crap out, you are likely good just putting up enough road blocks so the fools will go elsewhere. I am in IT and do a lot of security. We always layer it. Make it harder so they go somewhere else.

The tamper strip on the channel and the sign is a good idea. It will not work with the rocket scientists who are high or drunk or can't frickin read, but its all good suggestions.

Rigging it with a trap is kind of cool. Not likely. Just cool. Anyway to put something that flashed at them and scared the crap out of them. then take a picture. I would take the misdemeanor charge if I had to if it worked and it busted a punk somehow. That would make my day.

I still think activating the sprinklers is the best, non-lethal response I've seen. First saw it mentioned on ELK's site. Have them triggered by the bait wire (plus the siren, of course) and you know you've given someone a bad day.

I looked up your area and the crime rate listed is much higher than where I am at, the data for my area is from 2006 though and my area is filling up with scum from Los Angeles where there is over 100,000 gang members. Here is a link to the crime data for your area.

I found some crime data from 5 years ago for your area also so you can see the change.

oh ya? well my dad can beat up your dad! lol

thats for the links. interesting. one stat shows rape VERY high yet other shows is just about nothing? makes no sense and makes one question the stats doesnt it. never see rape on news here. rarely ever a murder, waco has a few its 30 miles. regardless of what the "proof" shows, i maintain there is minimal crime where I live, couldnt be happier with it. while there may be safer areas, i have no intention of finding it.

peace of mind has value. i have peace of mind. thats half the battle anways. well, that and some kick bootay automation, a big dog and 30-06! lol

My area used to have a low crime rate two years ago when the latest crime stats for my area were available, I seriously doubt that it is still lower than your area due to the huge influx of gang members from Los Angeles. The crime rates in my area and the towns around me has skyrocketed lately and many people in this area are now moving to other states.

As for the difference in stats from the 2 links, they were from 5 years apart. I guess things can change a lot in 5 years, I know they have here.

By the way, I looked up the crime rates for one of the larger towns about 15 miles from me, in 2003 the murder rate was only 55% of the national average and now it is 167% of the national average. The murder rate tripled in 5 years.

Goodness Wayne, tripled in five years? Wow. Suprised the radical left wingers havent shoved this down some more gullible throats attempting to use it as a tool to elect a community organizer. Think I will take a look at the south side of chicago and see if efforts there over the years from the messiah have made a difference.

I live well outside the city so I am sure that removes me a bit from the crime but the gang stuff is not prevalent in this area. Its amazing to me the recruiting ability of the thugs and how they convince the youth that gangs are the answer. If we could show them some home automation maybe they would take a new interest, lol.

Ranger,

At the very least, with the influx of purchasing power, the prices of out hardware would certainly drop!

OTOH, don't forget to check out the stats in AZ to see if their "hero" has been able to remember who he's supposed to be taking care of. LOL

yeah. i can see the headlines now...theft of home automation equipment soars as gang members target automated homes.

With phoen line monitoring and possibly the 'bait' wire i think you can scare of a good bit of the dumbwits. If you cut a wire and bells and whistles start going off...wouldnt you just get the hell out of here instead of stay to find out what other levels of security this house may have.

On the other hand they may think you have somehting worth all this security and regroup and come back. The funny thing is that the valuble thing is the security system itself.. :D

I'm no burglar but my guess is that unless you live in a very high end place you're most likely going to be the target of random selection by average thugs....would they really stick around if the lights come on?

Most of these stats are indeed questionable. The official FBI statistics that are quoted so often are still compiled from volunteered information. So there is no guarantee that what you read is accurate.

makes no sense and makes one question the stats doesnt it.

I love when FBI statistics are quoted by political groups, without citing...THEN when I figure, ok they just forgot to cite...I'll look it up...and the FBI has not compiled those statistics for THAT year at the time of the writing (we are talking back in '03, the group quoted the FBI statistics for '02, which they were only compiled up to '01)!

Now I just ignore anything that comes out of the mouths (fingers?) for anything associated to that group.

Awesome! I guess when people "take you at your word" your word is better than anything else!

P.S. sorry for being generic, I don't want to derail this thread...I also don't want to start a political debate (we've seen where those go).

While I can't guarantee the accuracy of Crime statistics for my area it is still easy to see the tremendous increase in crime.

The local newspapers front page story used to be a traffic accident or maybe a house fire, now it is drive by shootings, stabings, home invasion robberies, school riots and murders. Southern California used to be a great place to live now it is a great place to leave.
