UPB Switch Programming to Unknown Device

I installed a 110 device UPB/HAI configuration in my home about a year ago and am very happy with it. The only thing that I struggle with is the ability to program a UPB switch (SA US2-40 w/8 buttons faceplate but it could be any faceplate) to control an "unknown" device (relay8upb, rain8upb, etc.). Upstart will allow you to "reserve" a device number for the unknown device but there is no way to program a switch to send UPB commands to the unknown device because upstart has never verified the device. The only way I can control an unknown device is with UPB commands from the HAI controller.

Any suggestions appreciated!

I dont have any of these "unknown devices" so Im just guessing... But you can create a link, and then link the transmit buttons to this link without having a responder for the link in Upstart. Can these unknown devices be programmed to respond to links?

Thank you for your reply.

The "unknown devices" will respond to links. When you try to program a button to transmit a link, upstart will not program the button without verifying the destination device. These devices are not verifiable.

I have thought that maybe I cold spoof upstart and put a temporary device as the target and then physically remove it and still have the button programmed but I was hoping for an easier way (and I don't know if that will work anyway).

That does not make sense to me because I do it all the time. You may have to put more exact detail of what you are doing in UpStart. But you can easily create a link then go to the Transmit table to a switch, tell a button to transmit that new link you just created and reprogram that switch. There does not need to be a corresponding device to receive that link in UpStart. In fact, I have several switches that transmit links that are only picked up by my Elk to do things and UpStart knows nothing about the Elk. So you have to have something else going on there.

how does the manufacturer tell you to program for them?
They both have a serial port that enable you to program the device itself.

Unfortunately, this does not help you with the UPB switch that you want to control it. I do have my HAI box sending out UPB commands to these devices just fine.

FYI - I use the relay8upb as another way to control my garage doors (in addition to the normal wireless to car and wall button that control most all garage doors).

Thank you Steve - your post helped me figure it out. I needed to create the link in upstart without putting the destination device in it (essentially and empty link but tagged to the appropriate UPB link number). I was putting the "Unknown" device in the link and upstart would not program the switch because the destination device was not verified. I scratched my head on this one for quite some time but in the end it was a easy fix - Thank you again.

No problem, glad you got it. I know how you feel, sometimes you really bang your head against the wall for the 'seemingly' simple stuff.
