Video Surveillance Monitors

-For home video surveillance which is better a TV or computer monitor?

-I'm looking for an inexpensive smaller (~20") monitor with an HDMI input.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

Are you planning to have the display showing the camera feeds 24/7? If so, I would say a monitor... for one it would be cheaper than a TV which has a tuner built in.

Personally, I don't plan to sit and stare at my CCTV system when I am home, so I am tying it into my TVs as an additional input. If I want to pull up the cameras, I can just change the input of the TV.

Additionally, I have LG TVs which are able to be controlled via RS-232 (ASCII commands)... which I can tie into my Elk system and have the TV input change automatically when the doorbell is pressed.

Just the mention of another option for CCTV....

Here been playing a bit with XBMC.  I do not work for them and just having a bit of fun with the application.

That said I have configured IP cams as "favorites" in XBMC and it works well.

Just recently looking at maybe playing around with those little sticks with embedded Android on them that run XBMC.

These sticks that plug into your TV HDMI port do have the hardware for HD streaming and now have little quad core processors.

The folks at XBMC have redone the firmware on these such that they run the Linux based XBMC and take advantage of the CPU and HD streaming in a very lite manner with these little TV Sticks.

Which model of LG TV do you have? Have you tested the RS232 control and does it work reliably? I am looking to do the same thing.

Honestly the main differences between a TV And a Monitor are typically 1) the inclusion of a TV Tuner which is all but useless these days with STB's for every service, and 2) Resolution - TV's tend to be 1920x1080 no matter what; monitors can go higher or different resolutions even in a smaller package - but before counting on that, check the compatible resolutions for whatever is serving up the video.  Otherwise as long as both have an HDMI input it's all kinda the same.

FWIW, the main "TV" in my livingroom is just a Monitor with no tuner and we've never noticed any difference.

I bought my LG TVs a few years ago, but I believe the current models still have the RS-232 control port. I have connected to it and the control works very reliably; what I appreciated even more was the fact that the protocol was published as part of the owner's manual that I received when I purchased the TV... no 'secret' protocol that I had to search long and hard to find.
