Weird problem with my ELK M1G

All of a sudden, my system now displays the date and time as 00/00/00 00:00 and the clock doesn't move forward. I tried setting it from my PC with Elk RP. Won't work. I tried from a keypad. Doesn't work either. I shut down the whole thing, unplugged the battery and tried again. Still no change.

What's going on here?

Should I try to reset the clock chip???

Check the voltage on the on board Lithium coin cell when you have the panel power off. If the battery is dead this may be happening.

If not email/call your dealer for help. Elk Products requires that dealers provide tech support. If they do not help you within a reasonable time report them to ELK. If you need to service your panel and your dealer does not help you PM me and I will arrange a warranty claim or repair if it is out of warranty.

BTW you posted this at 2 AM and received a response at 3 AM yet ELK is telling me that I do not meet their new requirements for Tech Support and are putting me out of business. I help people who bought from other dealers who do not provide support and yet ELK puts me out of business not them because they are bigger (Spytown etc).

I am an authorized dealer and sold at the MAP pricing etc. as instructed by ELK and followed their rules for pricing even if I lost the sale to someone else breaking the rules. You even asked me to meet or beat a competitors price once that was not MAP and I did not because of ELK's rules and yet I am being put out of business and the other guy is not. Where are they for tech support after the sale?

There have been some rare reported instances of the clock chip locking up. The clock is dual powered, both from the main power supply and a coin cell "backup" lithium battery located under the front cover. This battery IS NOT USED FOR SYSTEM MEMORY RETENSION, it is only used to keep the clock running when the control is not powered up. The solution to unlock the clock and reset it to running condition requires that it be totally powered down. Use the following procedures: A. Remove the M1 cover (it may be easiest to remove the board from the box first). B. Then slip a small piece of paper in between the coin cell battery (upper left corner) and the metal clip that holds it in. C. Leave this paper in place and turn off the M1 power switch. D. After 15 seconds, turn the power switch on and remove the paper. E. This will unlock the clock and allow it to be set from the keypad or from the Elk-RP software. The revision of M1 firmware has no effect on the clock chip since it is an independent processor. However, there may be a link between the lockup and the process involved in updating the firmware, which causes the M1 to reboot each time. Other believed cases involved repeated powering up and down of the control in a short time period.

Wayne thanks for looking that up. I knew it had something to do with the battery onboard. At 3 am I just could not remember the details.

My hunch was good all along. An internal clock reset fixed the problem. Thanks for confirming. I just didn't want to do anything rash.
