The number 3 button is to check status of the alarm. If alarm is set I push button 3 and it lights up red. If the alarm is disarmed then button 3 lights green. Also explained that way on a couple elk videos I've seen.mikefamig said:

I recommend that you get the elk keyfob working before adding a second or third.
