Which touchscreen to buy

I am putting in a HAI system and am not too impressed with their Omni Touch 5.7" screens.  My thought was to get the OmniTouchPro software interface put that onto a computer and remotely send that program onto a touchscreen.  I will have power at all locations but PoE would be easier so I dont have to run a box. up to that area.  Any ideas?

Curious what you don't like about the HAI touchscreens.  Is it the size?

I've always thought their touch screens were great whenever I viewed them at various shows.

Here I have the legacy Omnitouch 5.7's and the newer Omnitouch 5.7e's.  My wife likes the older legacy screens better.

Both types are powered from the cat5e cable (one serially and one via POE).

The serial Omnitouch screens are going to an HAI Touchscreen hub these days with a separate power supply.

I am currently doing POE with these little mini XP E like touchscreens and they work well with Snaplink.  The little mini touchscreens also run linux or Android (but are hardware and software (firmware) modded.  They are running on single core hyper threaded Atom Z520's with only 500 Mb of memory.  They do play back HD stuff.

The reason why I dont like them is that because of the poor OS it can not run multiple video feeds with a decent fps rate.  I think they are overpriced for what I want to do. I could use an IPAD which is bigger does more and is sleeker looking that the Omni Touch.  Also I dont have any USB sticks with less that 50MB so it would be tough to update them.   LOL

Really? The lack of owning a 50MB USB stick becomes an issue in your decision? That shuold not really be a consideration. Especially if you are talking about buying the software. With the software you can update the panels without the USB stick.

Currently I have 5.7e screens all around the house. I am seriously considering iPad minis using Haiku or iRule.

I am kidding about the 50mb stick.  But my true dislike for the touchscreen is the A) Size B) Old Operating System C) Cost D) looking at an IPAD and knowing that it can do so mush more and looks  way cooler than circa 1998 touchscreen.  This is why I was wondering what other touchscreens are out there that I can run remotely from my computer that has the Home Automation software.

I am not sure I fully understand what you mean by this. Can you explain a little more?

What other touchscreens are available that are compatible with the Omni pro II other than HAI proprietary touchscreens and the Apple products (IPad, IPod etc)?

Well, with OmniTouch Pro, any touchscreen that runs Windows can be an HAI screen now.
Can you please provide a link that talks about this? This is new to me.

Thanks

My bad. I knew about the HAI software. I thought you had found something new. I had played with this a couple of years ago and thought it was very limited.

I use Homeseer although its a serial connection.  (this specific plugin though has not been updated in about 10 years now and only kind of works).  Main Lobby also lets you design your own screens and talks to the HAI OPII and Homeseer; think though its still a serial connection.  Folks here are also utilizing Haiku and HaikuHelper (bridging the Apple and Wintel world a bit with HaikuHelper).

You can though with the Homeseer touchscreen designer design your own touchscreens which today utilizing the same software runs on an Ipad, Android, Wintel (any flavor) and Linux.  All this with a touch screen design tool that runs in MS Windows.  I've been pushing the application with testing up to 15 touchscreens. (a variety including Wintel XP, CE, Linux and Android of various sizes).

A week or so back some one sent me a 4.3" $50 USD Android 1.2Ghz mini tablet.  I have installed the Homeseer touch client on it and it works just fine.   HAI Snaplink mobile would probably run on this little mini tablet just fine (I haven't tried it yet though).  House is a sandbox so will probably give this a try next.
