Wireless Camera Suggestion/Advice

Are there any cons to installing wireless cameras indoors? Can a person outside the home "sniff" the signal and see what is going on inside the home? Any recommendations on specific models? I've never installed wireless cameras indoors before and this is the only real issue I can think of.

Security is definitely a huge concern, especially with indoor cameras. There are plenty of articles/videos showing 'wardrivers' picking up wireless camera feeds from their car.

Also, if you plan to record these cameras using a DVR, forget about using motion detection on the DVR side, since wireless interference will continuously trip it. My opinion: don't do it!

I appreciate your response. I do not like anything wireless to be honest but in this application I have no choice. They want to monitor the nanny and their new born kid while they are at work and fishing cable through the house is not an option at this point.

I was looking at a camera from FOSCAM that uses WiFi. Are these type of cameras any safer?

Recording on motion should not be an issue. I think their main concern will be viewing the camera live from work and maybe I will have it record on a timer (continuously.

Now that i think about it, it would be great if these cameras can be turned off/on remotely so when they are home they can turn these off.

In that case, I would consider taking a look at the Logitech Alert cameras. They can use powerlines to communicate, and are very easy to access remotely (via phone or web). They also support powerline security, so it won't be easy to tap into the feeds. My review of this system is almost ready, or check out the Alert website for more info.

This seems perfect!

Thank you so much, I will research this.

If you use an IP camera and authenticate it to the network using WPA2, it's going to be fairly safe. There are attacks against WPA2, but I cannot imagine anyone is going to go through the trouble unless you're a defense contractor designing nuclear weapons or a financial institution.

I do wifi security assessments and penetration testing, and I run all sorts of wifi cams in my house. It's a relative non-issue as long as they support WPA2. Don't use WEP.
