wiring the garage door

Hey guys,

I've already got my wiring in place for garage door sensors but I'm wondering what the consensus is on wiring to the actual opener for automation. Is there a preference to wiring directly to the opener, or just the switch mounted on the wall? Any benefits? What wire did you use? I've got plenty of 22/4, 18/4 and CAT6 on hand...

thx

Use whatever you think you will need the least in the future. I personally have mine wired to the light switch, as it was a shorter run.

I wired to the opener location on the wall, mainly because we have 2 garage doors and I knew I'd put another opener in the same location at some point. I used 22/4, which worked great for getting 2 conductors to each opener.

We've wired one 22/4 to each opener on the ceiling (not the controls); because the LV wiring guy didn't run them before the sheetrock went up.

Ya, we had to run all our own door opener wiring too. Not a big deal, it's not like it can't just be stapled to the ceiling and wall in plain view...but since we had the opportunity to run it hidden, we did.

One of the things we've been able to do as a result is...because I used 22/4 for each of the door obstruction sensors, I was able to use the spare set of wires to wire in a spare momentary button on the wall next to the garage door. That button I then tied into the wires I had run to the door opener. So now if I'm near the door and want to open it, I don't have to walk across the garage to hit the opener. This is an actual plus (not just laziness), as our garage is pretty long AND cluttered.
