I think the main difference between now and the future is that home automation will get easier, more reliable, less expensive, and just generally better, and so more people will participate. That snowball is already starting to roll a little faster than before. Also, the kids growing up now are a lot more tech savvy, and tech obsessed, than the generations preceding them, so a greater percentage of them will be predisposed to do automation when they grow up and buy houses. Nonetheless, nearly anything you might want to do, you can already do, at least to some degree, if you have the time and the money and are sufficiently motivated. So, in that sense, I don't think we'll be seeing hugely disruptive change but rather just continuing improvements that, like compounded interest, will steadily become significant through accretion over time.
