I use an ancient can of Simonize. . just about anything should work- you want to watch out for silicone contamination as it can cause finishing issues (fisheye) later in the project. Candle wax will work but might be a little tough to apply.

Ok, I found that home depot carries SC Johnson Paste Wax, which combined with the replies, is mentioned on several websites for applying to the surface after cleaning. so I'll swing by there tonight and get that and finally have some clean tools! Good thing too, my drill press was already showing some rust signs....haven't taken care of it at all up to now.
