3-way switches, help fill me in

I have searched and haven't come up with a complete answer to my question.

I have many 3-way and 4-way switches in my house that I would like to automate, please help me understand why I need 3 or 4 Insteon switches to set these up? Why can't one switch be smart and the others be dumb?

Thanks!

Theoretically, they could build it that way... other vendors have. But, AFAIK, none of the other vendors have a LED bar graph that works properly on the remote. the advantage to doing it the way Insteon did is that it allows you to create virtual 3-way or 4-way or 5-way switches, even if your house wasn't wired that way. I have some lights controlled by 4 or 5 KeypadLincs and the house wasn't wired that way. UPB allows for a cheaper slave switch, but I think that many users still install two (or more) full switches for the added control & flexibility it offers, especially with the multi-purpose switchplates available for the US240 switch.
