Access to ElkRP and firmware updates

So I just got my Elk M1G and have to bench testing it and the peripherals. I wanted to do some configuration via ElkRP and make sure I had the latest firmware installed however I noticed that not only do I need to register on the ELK site to access this but I have to be approved by what looks like a manual process. What is the reasoning behind this? Not like the firmware or ElkRP software would be useful to anyone who does not have the hardware? Hopefully I get approved soon.

P.S. after doing to programming of the M1G via the keypad, I could not imagine trying to do any extensive complex setup via the keypad.

It's a licensing thing. You don't get full access to the software, etc. unless you have a valid SN for a panel, not much different from other manufacturers.

Well they were fairly quick giving me access. So I am good. Just seems odd since the software will not be of us without the hardware, license or no license.

That's true, but you have to realize the majority of their customers are dealers accessing this stuff who would have access easily; The percentage of DIYers using the product can't be that big.
