Adding photobeams to existing garage door

How about the opposite question. One of my photo beams is shorting out and I want to remove them. I do not have small children so I want to eliminate these. I tried just jumpering the wires and that didn't work. Can these be easily eliminated?

My understanding is "no" otherwise lots of lazy people wouldn't install them.

I can't believe I have to buy a new photo eye kit to get this to work. There has to be a way around this.

Couldn't you check the voltages and see what they are in certain conditions, and then simulate the right condition with resistors, etc. ?
