Anyone interested in all in one counter top touchscreen units?

Well, last night, I started to take apart the unit that is in the Kitchen. Wife asked what I was doing.

When I told her I was taking out the hard drive, to put in the other unit, she asked how to get the drive out. After looking at it for a bit, it looked like there was a fair amount of work in it.

I was vetoed. She likes the unit that I have there. So, I put it back together (for now).

I took the second unit downstairs (to keep the kiddies out of it). Hooked it up on my workbench. I started to re-install Win2k. Got to the point where I need to install the drivers. I installed them. This time using ONLY the drivers from the 30Meg file.

Started to reboot, and had to go watch the kids. So, I shut it down. When I get home, if it looks like it worked, then, I'm good to go.

I can't make a DISK image, as the working unit has a 20GB. The other unit has a 10GB...so I can't put the working image directly on the other unit, at least with the drive that's in there.

So, I could put a 250GB drive in there, temporarily, just long enough to try the working software image.

After that, I need to convene a meeting between the user of technology and "implementer / maker" of technology for our house, and see if I can convince her to let me swap the control card.

Her issue is, she doesn't want me to do something that torpedoes both units...as she likes the one in the kitchen very much. It now "clicks" her music for the kitchen zone MUCH MUCH faster and easier. It also, now displays the recipes in a way she can see them...and parses through the .xml database for said food preparedness directions with expediency!

So, I'll let you know more when I know more. Right now, I will see if I got the drivers to install properly.

Thanks again for following up!

You can always fake an issue (Change the display settings to 16 colors or something.) on the kitchen machine and use it for your testing while you are "fixing" it. ;)

I personally would install a stripped down version of XP on it (using nLite), and EWF (make the OS read only) to make it a true appliance. Very easy to do, and the machine would be very responsive.

Dan,

Do you have a link to the EWF?

All I found was for Embedded...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms...mbedded.5).aspx

So, finished the install. Put the "working" driver on from the 30meg. zip. Installed. Kept finding the device during install, but wouldn't find it to load the driver.

So, I installed the driver from the 3 meg file. Same deal, BUT this time the driver would load. HOWEVER, I'm in the same boat as before, it wouldn't detect my finger presses. So, I am now (should have been the first thing I did) going to take a closer look at the board, underneath the mobo. Make sure it's totally plugged in. All the cables looked good (Checked them out).

At this point, my troubleshooting steps are:
-check that the board is plugged in completly
-try to get the wife to let me use the other board in this unit (need to ensure they are both the same unit)
-get back with Dumetre with the results

Dan,

Check out this link for more info about optimizing your system. Especially the sticky threads (might have to check the last few pages of those threads), which contains tons of good info.

Does anyone have the specifics of the motherboards? I can not locate any markings etc. I am trying to locate the drivers I need but without the motherboard information it seems impossible. I would really like to get these running and I have invested a few hundred dollars in Windows XP and Windows 2000 in addition to the Touchscreens.

I know that the seller posted drivers but they do not work for Windows 2K and Windows XP did not load on my units (tried 3 different copies).

Thanks

Is this the one you have?

If so, this is the mb.

Dumetre do you know what motherboards are in the Touchscreens? I do not have the motherboard shown above.

Thanks

The board that is posted is a DFI board. If yours doesnt look like that you have a "BMC" board. Unfortunately I dont have the model number or I would post it. Did you try loading the windows xp drivers posted? Why doesnt windows xp load? It seems extremely odd that you can install 2k no problem but xp doesnt install...

I tried the drivers you posted and the unit no longer booted up (most likely not compatible with WIN 2000. Monk gave me the Lan adapter driver and it worked fine. I need the video driver and any others.

I have not heard of a BMC Mobo so I assume its really a BCM. BCM only seems to have 7 legacy boards with the WhizPro Bios I just cant identify which of the 7 it is.

My Best Guess is that it is BCM Model RX815ELT but I can not find that marked anywhere on the board. I will experiment with the drivers for that board.

DFI board current measurements-

3.3V 2.25 surge/1.85 cont
5V 4/1
12 1.2/1.2
5vsb .5/.5

5v is up in the 3.9A range quite a bit.

Still, it looks like the 90 watt picoPSU would do the job. I'm waiting to hear back from them on whether or not I need to derate w/out cooling.

picoPSU derating is only 20%- so the picoPSU-90 drops to 4A of 3.3v, and 4.8A of 5v, continuous. Still should be well within spec for driving the DFI.

Sweet! Thanks for taking the lead on this. I've not had much time. I still need to open my Unit1 and see what's going on in there.

Thanks to Dumetre for being so patient with my lack of time!
