The recent ice storms we had in Oklahoma resulted in numerous brown outs, power surges and total power loss at my house. I am building a new house which will be full of UPB technology and the ice storm raised my concerns about the best way to protect my expensive components against damage from the power fluctuations. I will be installing a whole house surge protector as part of my defense as well as surge protection on phone and cable. I also intend to use a trick I picked up from the guys at AO. It involved programming your system to turn everything off at the first hint of a brown out (before power is totally lost) to avoid the power fluctuations associated with brown outs.
Short of putting my whole house on a UPS, what else can I do protect my components?
As a side note, I am curious how UPB technology stacks up against other HA technologise. I did a search and found several threads discussing surge problems with Insteon systems but did not find any similar threads about other systems.
