Brinks RJ31X output jack to sensor with link to SmartThings Hub

New to the forum and also my first post. I searched the forum for this but did not see anything on this.

I wonder if there is a way (assuming this is the right way to approach this) to use the RJ45 (I think) output from my Brinks security control box that typically plugs into the RJ31X jack to "phone" the monitoring center instead to plug that into a sensor that my SmartThings hub could register and alert me if any of the alarm sensors (windows, doors and one motion sensor) is triggered. I wondered perhaps is there is an arduino wifi solution or other way to accommodate this hook up. My basic goal is to leverage the security infrastructure already in my home via the secutiry system vs have to buy all new SmartThings, Z-Wave etc. sensors.

No.  You need a security panel that has a serial port RS232 or Ethernet connection either included or through a compatible accessory.  Then you would need a specific software driver to connect that to SmartThings.

So you will have to replace your security main panel but the good news is your can keep your existing wiring and sensors.  However you would need to pick a system that has an existing software driver on SmartThings and other considerations such as if you are in a monitoring contract & what systems they accept.

There is some talk of it here but it doesn't seem to exist yet:  http://build.smartthings.com/forums/topic/dsc-alarm-integration-and-alarms-in-general/#post-685

SmartThings is in early adopter phase so you may get frustrated with the lack of options and want to consider a more developed platform such as ELK which doesnt have a lot of shiny apps, but does a lot of gruntwork.
