Can't say I'm surprised about the Nest detectors

Recently; last week; while visiting a local big box store; noticed a couple of folks mesmerized standing in front of the Next display which is prominently situated in one of the main isles of said store.

Just a few seconds passing by watched; they almost appeared to want to genuflect in front of the almost religiously (for a smoke detector?) canonical looking display.

Personally I have never seen this at a big box hardware store.

The most recent consumer reports has a small blurb on the Nest smoke detector and pretty much, the Nest detector doesn't really do it's primary job really well, detecting smoke..  so i'm wondering what the point of spending 5x the money for something that can't do it's primary function well?

But hey, it's "smart" and connects to the internet.. and works as a night light.

Then again, if we can tap into the motion detector of the protect and use it as a part of home automation, it would actually be nice.

I think it's nice that issues can be addressed by updating the firmware, but that benefit does not outweigh the downsides of 1) providing a new set of vulnerabilities (to remotely changing the firmware) or 2) letting the manufacturer off the hook for releasing their product in a beta state.

If it could not be remotely updated, customers would get a replacement, that's a benefit for them. The manufacturer would suffer a significant cost, and I think that would lead them to be more thorough in their testing in the future. That's also a benefit for the customer. Now? The manufacturer suffers a minor PR issue and that's it. It just encourages them to keep releasing new products in a beta state -- which, sadly, is pretty much the norm for electronics these days.

They're about selling the "look" and "convenience" of their products over functionality....wave to silence a smoke? How about releasing a multi-criteria detector that is almost immune to false alarms? They've been out for a few years on the commercial side of the industry, why not get them into the residential side.

All about selling the latest gadget to connect to your Idroid-berry-patiowindow feature phone vs. functionality.

So they can make the Nest look flat and pastel and provide abilities that it's competitors did 2 years ago and call it by a different name and claim it's their innovation?

Yeah, but think about all those poor Apple zombies that are living with no detectors today. Tomorrow, they could be blissfully adoring the new bump on their ceiling.

The bump would need to be circular, not rectangular.
