Connect PC to TV, only low resolution

I've connet my TV to my HA server via the component outputs of the server (video card came with a breakout cable).

For some reason i'm only able to set the resolution for the TV up to 1024 x 7something. Since the TV is capable of 1080i i would have expected to be able to do 1920x1080?

The videocard is a ATI Radeon 3450 and the TV is a Sony 51" rear projection DLP.

What am i missing here?

I don't know that card but, PC makers (as well as CE vendors) are under a lot of pressure by Hollywood when it comes to copy write protection. My guess is that any thing above a specific resolution has been disabled by the card maker so as not to output a "theft worthy" analog signal that could theoretically be burned by bypassing HDCP. Just my $.02 and I am by no means an "expert".

You will need to play around in the catalyst settings but generally speaking PCs only output P (progressive scan) not I (Interlaced scan) so you should try for 720p 1280x720 or 1366x768. Generally speaking Sony is one of the worst to deal with in my past experience. In the catalyst settings you may well be able to setup interlaced output and then 1920x1080.

The first thing to do is find the native resolution of the display as execeeding that is pointless.

1024x768 is a 4:3 aspect ratio I assume the TV is 16:9.

so if the tv can do 1080i but the card will not do that then i would have to go the next lower 'p' which would be 720p as you suggest. However the 1280x720 resolution is not listed as an option.

The catalyst control center is a pain to deal with.

The 1024x768 indeed didnt fill the screen and i had the Sony grey bars next to the image (if the those bards could only be gray...grrrr..).

That card will do 1080p, that is what I use, but I use the DVi connection, through an ATI HDMI dongle to my Sony 60" SXRD. This issue must be component out on the 3450.
I would take a look at Powerstrip, if that card is supported, to force it to 1080p over the component

ok..i'm not sure what i did...i installed powerstrip and restarted. After powerstrip detected a video card and ask if these were my default settings.

After that i didnt even open powerstrip but ATI catalyst reconized my TV as a HDTV and asked me which resolution it supported. I selected 1080i and now in Windows display setting i was able to increase the resolution to 1920x1080.

No sure what i did but it works..
