Considering OpenHAB any other contenders?

I notice a number of people using it on the mysensors forum.  Can what's alluring about it be summarized in a sentence or two?  Or do I have to be inculcated through full immersion before I "get it"?

No David you do not need to be inculcated through full immersion before I "get it"

I know you like to tinker.  Pick an Openhab binding-plugin that suits your fancy and play.

All it will cost is your time.

Getting it installed took a few minutes. Getting it to do something seems impossible.

Maybe if there were instructions with explanations on how to do a few things with ntp, system info, temperature, etc. Stuff that doesn't require specific hardware. Then do some scripts/rules/etc with them, that might be useful.

I toyed around with it a bit more and got it to kinda work. Its somewhat buggy and very hackish in what it supports. Not only that but getting it to do anything is a bear because the documentation is so bad.  I decided to stick with CQC for the moment. CQC supports more commercial products and documentation is light-years better.

FWIW, I notice on the mysensors forum that https://domoticz.com/ seems preferred over OpenHAB by a fair number of users.  I haven't tried it, but what I like about it is that it automatically graphs everything by default.  That stands in contrast with a number of HA software, like HomeSeer, which have no native graphing at all.

Yup; OpenHab can be a bit complex.  That said here only did play with the HAI stuff and it worked fine for me in Linux.

It is opensource and supported by a new community forum.

Because it is free; you do sometimes or not get very granular documentation.

That is the way it is with community open source software.

The authors of the plugins mostly are in to it for their own personal automation and share their methdologies or means of use of OpenHab.

Some do share more than others.

Guess here the differences are that I have been using Homeseer / Leviton HAI OPII now for many years and am a happy camper.

I am not looking to change or start all over these days with automation.  What I use or have just works me.

Because of this though I can tinker with new stuff and do.

It doesn't ever ding what is already working for me and I have no dependencies on anything new that I try.

I am very interested though in the approach and use of a variety of automation software and hardware and do try anything.

If the technology fits in to my realm then I integrate it to what I have and I have not had any issues doing this to date.

@bbrendon - whatever it is you decide to use is up to you.  You mentioned utilizing CQC.

Right here present almost every day on Cocoontech you have the author of said automation software.

Take advantage of that and go only forward now in your automation endeavor.
