Door Strikes... who's using them?

I'm using RCI strikes in two buildings. I believe their are S6514's:

In each case, they connect via relay to the Elk keypad's output and I use either an external keypad or prox sensor on the outside, depending on the application.

In both cases there's a standard door handle/lock that remains locked. So usage is: enter PIN/prox, then push open door. The key remains a backup in case of system failure. Both strikes are set to fail locked for security. From the inside, one can simply turn the handle to open the door, so there's no life safety (fire) issue.

p.s. with the RCI you can get the Latch Monitor/Keeper Monitor (LMKM) option. These are two more switches/inputs to your system that allow you to monitor for conditions like strike is closed and door latch is not present, which would be typical of someone putting tape on the door latch to defeat the system.

I have a couple of these. I can't comment on how well they work as I went with Mag locks for my doors and mine are still in the boxes.

Most standard strikes will not operate when there is a load on them.

Securitron makes a strike called the "unlatch" which the deadlatch portion of the strike drops in and then the strike pushes the deadlatch and the latch into the door to allow the door to open.

Interesting... so does this push the dead latch in when activated?

Yes. It actually allows the deadlatch to come out first, then it pushes the deadlatch and the latch in toward the door so that the door can be pulled open. It then resets so the latch will drop in to the strike while the deadlatch does not.

For you guys who want to monitor everything it can even be ordered with a latch monitoring output.

When you cut it in make sure you get the location exactly right. Too shallow, the weather stripping won't seal. Too deep, the latch won't line up properly.

Well, my Smarthome doorstrike appears to have died, makes no noise when power applied. I have yet to get my meter out and double check connections, but I suspect it is dead.

So I like the looks of this "Unlatch" device, and it looks like it will prob fit in my doorjamb, hopefully in the same hole the Smarthome strike was in. It does, however, need at least three wires to function (plus two more to monitor it).

But it is $200+ bucks at Amazon. Ouch.

When you put in your prox readers, and this is very important... Put them at butt level. Then if you keep your prox card in your pocket or wallet, you just touch your butt to the reader and don't have to take the card out. It's great for when your hands are full.

We had access control installed at a place I used to work and they put the readers at chest level. We made them come back and move all of them down to butt level.

I wish we had that still! Where I work, they were at butt level and right next to the doors. Then, some guy bent down so his chest mounted badge would trip the sensor, and caught a door in the face from an outgoing person. Now they are all mounted high and away from the door.

Doh!
