ELK M1-XSP

I am trying to install an XSP into my system. FOr some reason it will not turn on. Does anyone know if the unit has to be plugged into the CIM before it will power up and enroll? The instructions dont really state whether or not it does, just wondering?

Yea, Ive hooked it up correctly, just doesnt work. Sad thing is I bought his from another board member who swore it worked, but that was 7 months ago. Just decided to hook it up today, and well it doesnt work. Well see what happens.

You sure about no LEDs? This is what the manual says

M1XSP Diagnostic LED indicator
Slow blink (1/2 sec.) = Normal communication with M1.
Fast flicker = Communicating with other equipment (Thermostat, Lighting Controller, PC, etc.)
No blink = No communication with M1. Unit might be unplugged or powered off.

#3. No blink = No communication with M1. Unit might be unplugged or powered off.
I assume since I see nothing, and the system wont enroll it, then it doesnt work? When it says the unit may be unplugged, this is why I was asking if it has to be plugged into the CIM in order to work?

Mine does the slow blink as expected. I think everything elk sells has the same blink protocol. My Elk panel looks like a landing strip of blinking amber lights.

Spoke with Brad today from Elk. They want me to send the board in for troubleshooting. Im a little irritated as the person who resides on this board that I bought it from swore it worked. I guess next time Ill have to somehow verify that items do work as soon as I get them, not 7 months later. Oh well!

If it is defective you should just ask the person who sold it to you if they can work it out. Most likely they will.

No biggie, Ill just send it to Elk, and see what they do for me. I already sent the person an email, and they havent responded yet.

Ok, so I sent the unit back to elk, they verified the unit works, and returned the unit to me. I then hooked it back up to my system, and nothing! I have made all connections as I have with all my other expanders in reference to the wiring to the data bus, checked, and rechecked all wiring, but nothing. I have tried hooking the unit up directly to data bus on the unit (not using my DBH), and nothing. I have tried enrolling it, not relying on the units on board status light, but the system doesnt see it. I cant figure it out? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Probably a long shot, but are you using a known good piece of wire for your testing? When connected can you measure the voltage at the board to verify it has power to it? If you have connected it "properly" and Elk says it is fine, then there is little else.

Yes I have a known good piece of wire, and i do get 13v to the board from the data bus. Im lost???

While I wouldn't think it would prevent it from showing up, you sure the bus terminations are right? Is the dip switch set right, you have a unique address? With thinks connected but system powered off measure the resistance of the whole bus at the m1. IIRC it should read around 70 ohms. And are you absolutely positive the wire is good on all 4 conductors. Can't tell you how mine times issues like this turn out to be wiring.

Yea terminations are correct.
Address 1 as its the first XSp in my system
Its plugged into a data bus hub, so no EOL termination on the actual board
baud rate doesnt matter per the manual
other pins are set for UPB
also set to rs232 for the outbound connection

Have all 4 connectors wired up correctly with A and B data also correct

What does IIRC mean??

I have tried several pieces of wire to connect, all with the same result. A continuity check shows all wires fine.

Im still lost???

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly

If you are not getting any LEDs to light on the XSP, then I would focus on your power wiring and leave the data bus disconnected for the moment. I assume (but haven't verified) that you should see some LED activity as soon as the XSP sees power.

Lets do a little trouble shooting on the M1XSP:

1. Make sure you have 13 volt DC at the appropriate power terminals. Reversed power will not work due to a diode on the board.

2. With M1 power off, measure the resistance across the Data A and Data B terminals given that you have two terminating jumpers on the RS485 data bus. You should read around 65 ohms +- 10 ohms.

3. Make sure the Data A and Data B wires on the RS485 data bus are not reversed. No workie if reversed!!

4. Upon power up you should get the status LED blinking.
