Elk M1G and Uplink 2550

Hi all,

I have an Elk M1G and an Uplink 2550 which is "directly" compatible with the M1G via serial connection, but it does have a dialer input.

I've connected the TIP/RING of the M1G to the right place on the 2550, but the dialing isn't working.  The M1G keeps popping a comm error.

I think it might have to do with the fact that the Uplink 2550 expects an incoming POTS line, but I don't have a POTS line, I just want to use it as my only connection to the central station.  I have full control over the Uplink programming at uplink.com if I need to change something.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Thanks!

Rob

The 2550 is not serial.

The unit does NOT need an incoming POTS line. You have the wiring incorrect somewhere. Either the RJ cord is not correct (T/R) and reversed or your dialer programming/emulation is not proper.

The 2550 is dialer capture, so the unit, when connected, will emulate a CS receiver and then retransmit the data. The fact the M1 is indicating a FTC means your connection between the M1 and the 2550 is suspect first.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Oops, I mistyped up there.  I meant to say the 2550 does NOT have a direct serial connection as does the 2500.  Sorry about that.

I just verified my connections from the ELK to the 2550.  The 2550 conveniently has some test points on the board to verify if your TIP and RING wires are correct.  I checked continuity from those test points to the TIP/RING inputs on the M1G board and they are testing fine.

Does the M1G expect a dial tone?  If I were to connect an analog phone to the TIP/RING line on the 2550, should I get a dial tone?

At this point I'm grasping at straws...

You should be able to meter voltage at the 2550 on the POTS terminals.

You should also be able to hook up a phone and have the unit give a dial tone. It would be best if you had a butt set to listen in to hear what is going on, if there's the panel going off hook, dialing, the 2550 giving hte handshake, the M1 dumping the data and subsequent kissoff.

Does the M1 have dialer and account information programmed into it?

Thanks for the replies @DEL.

So I put a buttset on the ring/tip terminals on the 2550 and I get nothing at all, no deal tone, no sound whatsoever.

I suppose that explains why this isn't working.

Is there an option to disable the phone line functionality in the uplink setup?  That would seem very counterintuitive to me, but I really don't know what else it could be.

Yes I have an "Always call this number" Telephone set up in ElkRP.  I set it to call my cell phone (and had the Uplink set up the same way on the uplink website).

Not sure what else I can try at this point.

You should be able to put a butt set on the Uplink, go off hook and hear a dial tone, and after 7-10 DTMF tones, have it emulate a CS receiver.

From memory, there is a way to set up the Uplink to be a primary communicator, or at least there is on the 4550's. I don't have 2550's out there in the wild.

If you don't get anything out of the M1, then I'd look at the RSSI and status of the Uplink. Something doesn't sound right.

I'd look into it, but I don't want to risk getting billed for your unit.
