Elk to my cell phone

My kids tell me not to admit this, but I have just activated a Verizon Samsung Smartphone. It uses a MS Mobile6 OS. I can't acces my M1G remotely and I'm assuming it is because I don't have the Java applet installed. I went to the Java site and don't see an option for my mobile device. Is there anyone using a smartphone with I-net to connect to their Elk? What do I need to do? This is one of my main reasons for activating this phone. Thanks for your help.

This is only my opinion and I only bring it up as you may be within the time frame to exchange your phone. IMHO you are much better off with a Android based or iOS (iPhone) phone. Most developers these days are designing for those phone platforms and they are way ahead of MS right now in terms of easy of use and functionality. For right now on Verizon you can get several Android based phones and then get ElkDroid. Something like this is pretty much plug and play - no Java, web crap or anything. These smartphone apps are well worth their money instead of trying to do web based stuff.

Yes, return it to the store now. Windows Mobile is DEAD (it had a great run!). MS is working on a replacement OS (Windows Phone), but it is a complete revamp and won't be backwards compatible, which is why investing in WM6 doesn't make much sense.

I just traded mine in for a Droid, and it has been a blast. I highly recommend the Droid 2 (I have the original, the 2 is faster and has a better keyboard). Verizon gives you 30 days to change your mind about the phone.

That said, WM6 doesn't support JAVA. The best way to access your M1 on your phone is by purchasing ELK RMS, which runs just fine (actually works well). If that isn't an option, then you will need home automation software which has a built in webserver or touchscreen client (e.g., Elve, CQC, HomeSeer, HouseBot). If you don't want to invest in anymore software, then your only option will be logmein (works great on WM, and is free), or remote desktop.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Looks like I won't even give the dinosaur a chance. Its off to the verizon store! I hate43 the thought of renewing my contract with them but it looks loke I don't have much choice. Thanks again.
PS. I hate when my kids are right! Ha!

FYI, none of the other popular smartphones don't really support running JAVA either (just too slow, or limited), so you would still have to purchase an application (eKeypad on iPhone, ElkDroid on Android), but at least you have a platform which is extremely popular and supported.

Thanks Dan, I did not buy this phone, it is actually an older phone that I activated. I thought I would use it for a while to see if I would like it before buying a newer phone (I have fat & not very dexterous fingers). I mostly want it for emails and maybe update some word or exel Doc.s in the field and probably internet access. And maybe even for talking. I suppose I would have a contract no matter what service I get.

Ever so slight threadjack here. I have an android phone (Samsung Vibrant, if that matters). I want to know how to view the streaming video from my network security cameras in my house on my cell phone. I have tried going to the URLs for my cameras, and none of them work. By "not working", I mean nothing shows up. No error message, no nothing. My guess is my cameras aren't encoding the stream in a format that my phone can render??? I don't know a lot about streaming video, and I doubt if I even said that last sentence correctly. If it matters, my camera is a Panasonic BL-C1A.

I used URL Snoop to get the actual URL for the video stream, which looks like this:
http://mysupersecreturl:8002/ImageViewer?R...ality=Precision

This link works in all desktop web browsers that I have used. It just renders a view of the stream with nothing else on the page. But it doesn't work on my phone.

That link doesn't work for me.

Sorry, it wasn't meant to. Even though the actual site is protected by http auth, I don't want to risk things by sending out my address to my house video cameras.

Do you feel you would need to have access to the actual stream to help out here? I guess I could set up a temporary dynamic dns for a short period of time.

The camera uses MJPEG iirc, which can be tricky with browsers. Right now, I'd recommend you take a look at Total Control's Android Vidcam app, which supports this cam:

I just tried accessing my BL-C10A via a remote SSH tunnel, and it looks like the connection does close right after authenticating, so not sure what is going on. Will try again tomorrow when I am on the right network.

Thanks, Dan. That app did the trick!
