ElkRm software

Just a brief overview:

ElkRM has a "three strikes and your out" routine for requesting data... In your first reply, you saw the following data:

XMIT: 06rr0056
XMIT: 07ps30023
XMIT: 07ps30023
XMIT: 07ps30023

ElkRM tried to poll for status of the third lighting bank 3 times and then it requested the "real time clock" info to see if it indeed has been disconnected... If ElkRM does not get a reply back, it will assume that it has been disconnected and will start trying to reconnect...

In your second reply, the "SD" string asks for the area's name that you are in. You got a reply back saying the name of the current area is "AREA1". The area name is the last piece of info that it requests from the M1XEP/M1 when it is booting. If ElkRM is sitting idle, it watches for the "XK" message which is a keep alive message that comes from the M1XEP/M1. You never saw this string which explains why it was saying it was disconnected.

In short, it looks like ElkRM is functioning correctly... So now we have to figure out what is dropping out causing us to loose connection (M1XEP/router/ethernet card in the computer). Beeing that you use the computer everyday on you home network, I would say it is not your router or ethernet card...

I spoke with the M1XEP's engineer, and he has requested that you reboot the M1XEP(cycle power). Watch the status LED's on the Ethernet connector on the XEP to familiarize yourself with the LED's blink sequence when it is booting up... After the XEP has booted up, continue to watch to see if it looks like the XEP is rebooting for some reason...

If you have the hardware to do it, you may want to try to connect ElkRM directly to the M1 using a serial port. If you get to try this, please use the monitor window to track the data like you did previously...

Is this a new M1XEP that you have bought recently, or is this one that has been on your system for a while? If you have had it installed for a while, is this the first time you have used ElkRM with it? (trying to track what has changed that could have started your problems)

Please inform us to your findings!

Chris
Thanks Chris,

FYI, I have tried to use the RM software from a new Vista laptop that connects to my linksys wireless router which connects via ethernet cable to the
M1XEP and also from a winxp laptop which connects to the router/switch via a patch cable and both computers give me the same results.

I will try rebooting the xep and also connecting via a serial cable and will let you know the results. Your efforts are appreciated.

Ron

Chris,

I am new to the Elk system so all this items have been purchased within the last 2 months. This is the first time I have tried to use the ElkRM software.

It does not look like the xep is rebooting. I bought a serial connection and plugged the xp laptop into the m1's serial port. I was able to log in and did not get booted so it seems the M1 is good to go.

Another tidbit. I have an insteon lighting network controlled by a UDI ISY-26. The UDI ISY 26 plugs into the same network hub as the xep. I have exported my lighting to ELK from ISY. I can access the ELk Virtual Keypad through the ISY 26 console and this works fine. I can arm and disarm the system as well as adjust and control lighting through the virtual keypad.

Couple things to try:

1)
Unplug the ISY from your LAN or completely power it back off. Power cycle your M1 and XEP (do not power back up the ISY). Allow the M1 to boot, and give a few minutes for the XEP to completely boot up. Test ElkRM to see if you get connected and everything is working properly...

2)
If the above does not tell us anything. Open up ElkRP and connect with your panel. Under "Lighting", make sure that all of the "Future" boxes are checked beside all of your programmed lighting devices. Send the new changes to the M1. Test ElkRM again...

Let us know what this does/doesn't do!

What versions of firmware are you running in the M1 and the XEP?

Chris

I will give this a try. In the mean time my setup includes:

m1 gold hardware version 0.11, Bootware 2.3.2, Firmware 5.1.4
m1xep harware 1.0, bootware 1.1.4, firmware 1.2.12

I unplugged isy from the lan and rebooted but still not able to connect. I then went into lighting and made sure all the future boxes were checked....some were not, but that still does not allow me to stay connected via the RM software. Thanks for your continued help.

One last thing to try before we take drastic measures:

On your WinXP machine, try to make a "Hyperterminal" connection to your XEP on port 2101.

To access Hyperterminal, goto Start>Programs>Accesories>Communications>Hyperterminal

Name the connection anything you want...
In the "Connect using:" combo box, select TCP/IP Winsock...
In the "Host address:" text box, put in your M1XEP's IP address...
In the "Port number:" text box, put in 2101...

Watch what data comes through this window... Let me know if you ever see the "XK" string. The XK will be the third and fourch character in the string. After you have monitored the data for 5-10 minutes, save the data and post it. This will tell me the next step to take...

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

lots of xk strings.

I hope this helps! Coccontech would not let me upload a ht file extension. Here is the 1st 5 minutes of data up until my motion sensor shut the lights off in the office.

Very interesting... Everything looks ok here...

Is there any way you can export your ElkRP account and send it to Elk. I will setup a system with your accound to see if I can duplicate your problem...

To export an account in ElkRP:
Open up the account in ElkRP...
Click on the "File" menu, and then "Export Account..."
This will ask you where you want to save it...

Please contact Elk tech support (Brad Weeks/Amy Strickland 828-397-4200) and let them know that I requested that you send this to us. They will give you an email address to send it to. I would also like to talk with you when you call in so ask the tech support person to get me on conference. It would also be helpful if I could gain access to your system from the outside world. This would require port forwarding through your router, and you would have to setup some temporary codes for me so I could log in with ElkRP/ElkRM... Let me know if this is an issue...

I will be out of town Thursday and Friday... I want to try to get an action plan together today so we can get you fixed up...

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Thanks for the help. I was having a problem connecting, and figured out that the XEP didn't have port 2101 enabled. I didn't figure this out until I read your post, suggesting to click receive, in order to see what the XEP really had configured. My ElkRP showed that it was enabled, but the XEP did not. Thanks!

Quick follow-up (sorry to hijack), my ElkRM is running in Demo mode. I have tried to enter just about every number that I can find on the CD, CD case, or box, but none of them are correct. Do I need to call Elk, or the store that I purchased it from in order to get my key? It didn't come with a packing slip (in the Elk forums, it was suggested that the key is on the packing slip).

Contact ELK Technical 800-797-9355 with your M1 Control's serial number. They can give you ELKRM's access code to take it out of DEMO mode if you have purchased ELKRM.
