EXIT ERROR

Today, my wife left the house and armed the alarm. 7 minutes later, the alrm went off. The Elk log shows EXIT ERROR, a zone violation, and subsequent burglar alarm. Does anybody know what might have caused that exit error and subsequent alarm?

Could it be that the motion detector senses the heat from the window? You might want to try to troubleshoot the problem just to make sure all the zones are secured properly (like making sure the magnet be as close to the door/window transmitter and such).

When you say the alarm went off 7 minutes later do you mean the siren? central station call? panel went into alrm status? What is your exit time on the zones involved?

yes, the siren went off, central station called me, and the panel went into alarm status. The exit time is 60 seconds, so to see EXIT ERROR 7 minutes after arming was quite disconcerting. It is a wireless motion detector (obviously, security grade though) that caused the error, so maybe it just missed a reporting cycle. I'd sure like to get Spanky's input on what might cause this message in the log.

Maybe you could post that section of the log... any zone info at that time? Could not produce that error on some simple exit tests...

There's this note in the manual which might help:

Exit Error If an entry/exit zone is violated when the Exit Delay expires, the Exit Error Feature will be activated. The
local siren will sound immediately and the Entry Delay warning will begin. IF the control is not disarmed before the
delay expires the communicator will report the alarm along with an Exit Error code, provided these codes are
programmed. An Exit Error event flag will also be set which can be used by the “Whenever/And/Then” rules (refer to
the ELK-RP software) to sound a siren, or blink a light, or whatever. Exit Error complies with SIA CP-01. †

Exit Error Code can be used to identify an accidental alarm caused by an error while
arming. Locally, it works as follows: If an exit delay rolls directly into entry delay as a
result of a zone being left violated, the entry delay warning AND the siren will sound. If the
control is not disarmed prior to the entry delay expiring, the communicator will report the
alarm along with the Exit Error code. Range is 00 to FF. Default is 00 (no report).

awesome, that's exactly what i was looking for. so somehow, the motion detector didn't clear it's status... plausible since it's wireless.

I am still curious.... since your exit timer is 60 seconds, it sounds like the siren should have gone off 60 seconds after your wife armed it. Would she have been out of earshot of the siren within 60 seconds?

Do you have a 6 minute entry delay? I still don't see where the 7 minutes came from if your entry delay in only 1 or 2 minutes.

Is the motion sensor in question an entry/exit zone?

How are the 7 minutes being calculated? Do you actually see the 7 minutes within your log, or are basing it by other means?

12:34 -- Area 1 Disarmed
12:35 -- Area 1 Armed
12:42 -- Area 1 EXIT ERROR
12:42 -- Burglar Alarm in Area 1
12:43 -- Motion Detect Burglar Zone Resotred

so, the 7 minutes is actually in my log. both my entry and exit delays are set at 60 seconds. and the motion detector is certainly not force armable (at least, i'm 90% sure on that... i'd have to check ElkRP to be 100%). the motion detector is NOT an entry/exit zone, but it IS a follow zone (is that the right term?). that is, when I open a door, I can walk in front of the motion detector to get to the keypad without setting off the alarm immediately when the motion detector is tripped.

Come to to M1 software version 5.1.14. There is a lot of changes since 5.0.12.

I am off to Hong Kong Electronics Show. New toys!
