Flat Panel TV install (not normal question)

I am mounting a flat panel television in my bed room. The thing is that the other side of the wall is our closet so, here is what I am after. I am going to place all my components (satellite receiver and DVD player) inside the closet so that only the tv will show. I am having an electrician come over and put a 4-way 110 outlet in the upper part of the closet directly behind where the television will be located and the components will all be on the upper self.

I am planning on cutting around a 3" hole straight threw both bedroom side and closet side of the wall behind where the tv will be mounted. I am looking for some type of tube with beauty rings that will snap together to fit into the hole. The only thing I can think of to compare it to is the plastic rings you see on computer desks for pulling wires through. Does anyone have an idea where or if I can find something along those lines?

My second question is...since all my components will be inside the closet behind a wall what kind of item do I use to be able to use my remotes? Is there a product which will allow me to use my satellite remote instead of getting a universal remote?

They are called grommets...Try a search for desk grommet on google. I used some I bought at lowes.

You can buy them about anywhere. It converts the IR from your remote to RF and then back again.

What is the brand and model of your TV. My Toshiba has IR pass-through. There are two 1/8" phono plugs on the back of my TV to plug in IR transmitters. The TV itself acts as an IR repeater. If your TV does not have this feature then you are probably going to have to do one of the following:
- Use a Powermid
- IR repeater from Xantec, Niles, or one of the other companies that provide this type of service
- purchase a programable remote that does RF (Logitech/Harmony, Monster, Universal remote, etc)
- If you are going to connect a PC to your TV, you may also consider using a PC based IR solution.

I use Xantech stuff for my IR distribution - both to get inside cabinets and to get between different rooms.

One thing that caught my eye in the original post is that it's apparently against code in many areas to put outlets inside closets. Same thing for circuit breaker panels. This caused (minor) problems for someone I know when they added on to their house.

x2 PC based IR control is very powerful, if you do it use USBUIRTs they have the broadest support.



You are doing basically what I am doing but in my case the TV is almost directly below the server closet so I am lucky enough to be able to use 12' cables (that rocks!!!) but I deal with the same issues. I use a Snapstream FireFly remote, USBUIRT and EventGhost software. It works crazy well and if you run out of IO zones just buy another USBUIRT they are under $50, each has 1 input and 3 output zones. Since I only use RF remotes (except of a couple of the MVPs) I don't really need any IR input zones, this is changing for me but you can go a long ways.

Great thank you! I really don't want to use a universal remote and this X-10 Powermid looks perfect. Still have not come across the correct grommet but, I will keep looking. Thanks again for everyones help and ideas.

Don't use grommets, use a bulk wire nose plate. They allow a bunch of wires to be passed through the wall and I'm sure you could use a single gang version to make a nice clean installation. Use one on both sides of the wall (two total). The should not be exactly back to back. One will need to be placed higher on the wall or farther over on the wall than the other.

You can get a version that has a cover that sticks out from the wall, or one that the cover is inside the wall making a "flush" installation. The picture below shows one of each style. They only show one wire coming through the plate, but you can stick a lot more than one wire through. I currently use one at my touchscreen location in the kitchen. I have VGA, Serial, and a USB plug coming through with plenty of room to spare on a single gang plate.
