Google to buy Nest for $3.2B

Wow! Google already knows me better than my wife...now they will know my temp pref too. Who can they sell that to?

Look out for more sweater and coat ads if you constantly adjust the heat up in the winter. They'll also know how much time you spend at and away from home.

So glad I didn't purchase a Nest as this product will most likely see the same demise as all of my SageTV hardare! :axe:
I know...really. The only thing Google has purchasd that they didn't kill that I used was Sketchup.

Alternatively, they put it together with the home automation stuff they pushed/bought/announced a few years ago that never went anywhere. Is now the time?

i doubt google is going to kill nest.  nest was about to close a funding round at a $2B valuation and google swooped in and paid a 60% premium to that.  you don't do that if you're going to kill it off (especially for something they paid billions for).  google was already working on some smart tstat project.  the purchase price for sage was never released, but i wouldn't be surprised if it was $10M or less and at that price, investment & support to keep it going wouldn't be worth it for something they apparently only wanted IP from.

there are things they purchase and keep going ;) youtube, waze, android, motorola, ...

Its not the thermostat that they care about. The big money for them was the Nest Protect Gas and Smoke detector.  Once it detects a certain type of smoke in your house, you will immediately see hundreds of Taco Bell ads pop up on your screen. This tie-in could help them bring in billions.

It really is all about the occupancy sensors.  Develop a profile for when you are at home.  If you are, how often do you actually get off of your lazy butt to walk around, and how much do you spend sitting in certain rooms.... which then when you conveniently labeled the devices as "Living Room" and "Office" allows for even more precise ad targeting...

Ahh now it makes perfect sense!

Ok here's a far fetched conspiracy for you. The Protect smoke detector has a speaker and wifi. Any speaker can be turned into a microphone. Just ask Edison or Bell. So basically by installing Protect smoke detector(s) you are saving the NSA from having to perform a black bag job on your home, and Google supplies all the data. Nice!

That is wrong...so wrong! :)

A company comes out with a truly useful, well made, quality product... Has never given me a moment of trouble... Looks great... Paid for itself in less than one year...

And people wonder that another successful company that makes a product most of us use every day buys them... Really makes me understand why so many tech products are so poorly done. I can't tell if some comments are jealousy or just tinfoil hat worthy.
