HAI Keypad Dimming

Looked through the manual and I cannot find an answer. Is there a way to dim the HAI Keypad. We are looking to put one in our bedroom, but they are so bright I am not sure that would work to well WAF wise..

There is a mod around somewhere that causes the keypad backlights to turn on and off with the display backlight. I don't know of any way to dim the keypad. If I were you, instead of a keypad in the bedroom, I'd put in a touch screen -- those go completely dark when the screen saver kicks in.

I will probably put a touchscreen in there eventually.. But for right now I am looking to do a keypad. How do you turn on and off the display backlight? On the one console I have it is on all the time.. Looked in the manual and don't see a way to turn it off?

Set the keypad backlight to timed or off and it will be completely dark when not being used.
This can be set at each keypad individually.

On page 12 of the Installation Manual under Console Setup
I don't know why they didn't include this in the Owners Manual.

Press and hold 4 and the up arrow for about a second and a menu will pop up
Scroll down to "Key Backlight"
The keys can be never lit, always lit, or only lit when the LCD display is lit. Select (0)
OFF, (1) for ON, or (2) TIMED, then press the # key.
Then press and hold the 4 and up arrow keys again to save and return to operation.

This only affects the keys, not the text display.

Thanks for the reply. I found the installation manual and read this section.. I am assuming "TIMED" matches to "only lit when the LCD display is lit"...

What controls when the LCD display is lit?

You are correct WRT "Timed"

If you press any button the LCD backlight comes on and then goes off a few (3 I believe) minutes later.

If you set the key backlight to "Timed" they will go on and off together.

OK.. My LCD backlight was never turning off before.. I will set it to timed and see if that makes it turn off after a while.

This seemed like a reasonable place to ask.

Do the HAI keypad or TSs allow for muting of announcements? Thinking of a MBR location.

And, does the 5.7e display have programmable lighting levels, and/or a light sensor?

And, of course, how is your KP working out in the MBR, broconne?

You can turn the beepers off at each console in the setup menu or globally/individually through programming.
You can mute the 5.7e, you need to do it either through programming or build a touch button on the interface screen.
The voice announcements to speakers are controlled via programming.

You can adjust the 5.7e brightness in the initial setup screen.
I don't think you can change it dynamically (I could be wrong here).
To the best of my knowledge it doesn't have a light sensor either.

I use a timeclock from "bed time" to "wakeup time" to mute the console beepers.
They are reenabled when the timeclock is off or if there is an alarm or a vehicle on the driveway.
I use the same timeclock to prevent voice announcements during the same period.

Thanks, Desert_AIP!

Onto researching water/flood sensing. Not much on HAI site, but think I have it covered. Will resurrect another ancient thread if I need help. ;)

I've had several customers that hate the blue light (for health reasons).

Any thoughts on changing the back-light to green?   Are any other keypads compatible with HAI ?

Look for an older one on eBay. They used to be green before they were blue. You should be able to find the green ones pretty cheaply.

What kind of health problem do blue LED's cause?
I'm sure you could open one up and swap out the LED's if you wanted.  I know lot's of people that do it on vehicle dash clusters.  You need good soldering skills though.

This is a 2yr old thread, but just because this can be interesting reading for people: Blue light is said to affect our circadian rhythms and disturb sleep, especially in places like your bedroom.  Even little things like the bright blue light on your TV are said to affect people.

Off literally the first result from a search of blue light's affects is one article:

Blue light regulates our secretion of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Exposed to blue light, we limit the production of melatonin, and we stay alert and awake; in the absence of blue light, melatonin production ramps up, and we get sleepy.

I did look on eBay.  They are all blue.  I don't have a problem with changing out the LEDs myself.   Do you think the LEDs are accessible?

(  By the way, I cannot figure out how to edit a post, after it has been posted. )

I appreciate the above post about blue LEDs. It's not uncommon for me to have customers complain about blue LEDs with various devices.  I suspect the blue LEDs are designed into various products by the youngest and most inexperienced designers.
