Hardwired blind install pics?

Hey there,

I'm looking to prewire for hardwired automated blinds. How are you guys wiring them? I was thinking of finding some panel mount 4 wire connectors) I believe this is correct, 2 power, 2 control). Then mount them in the window, similar to a recessed mag switch. Anyone done something similar, and have some pics?

Other suggestions? I'm trying to stay away from wireless. I will have some wireless, but I'd like to wire for wired, while I can. Worst case I go wireless if need be.

Good idea. What blinds are you wanting to pre-wire for?. Brand and type (style)? There are 12v hard wired blinds and there are 110v hard wired blinds. Now there are 18v. blinds that can be run from a wall cube. Lots of choices to think ahead about.

As a dealer, we run into this pre-wire requirement often.

I had not looked at blinds yet. The wife has to go down to the local blind shop and look at styles. Though I don't believe I need more then 4 wires. 2 power, 2 comm (DC, 232/485 shouldn't matter). I just figured, why bury them in the wall, only later to try and drill a hole, and fish them out. Might as well put receptacles in each window. So wire with 2 separate cables, and it will meet code. Any reason, or reasonable situation I would need more then 2 control wires?

I have just looked online at the following brands:
Lutron
Hunter Douglas

The local drape store wants me to look at elite.

I would run cat5 for control, it will cover all possible options. One of my somfy shades has a dry contact interface and uses 3 wires

So yours uses a separate forward and reverse signal, with a shared common.

I guess I could do a panel mount snap in rj45 jack

Yeah, all depends on current draw. I'm just trying to find a plug to use. I could do rj45 and a 2 pin. Or if I got 110v, just use the comms on rj45

I'm going with Somfy to an HAI panel. To do this I'm wiring 16/2 for motor power and 22/4 for RS485 control from each shade to my server room. I only need 2 control wires for RS485, but this leaves me with 2 spare wires for future use. CAT5 would be the ultimate for future use, but somewhat overkill in my opinion.

What motor brand are you looking at?

I am also planning on using Somfy with the HAI. For all my stuff I hardwired cat 5 to both the shade moter location and to the switch (2 seperate runs to 2 centralized locations). I installed 1/2 smurf to the closest electrical box for power. Both come out at a location on the window where all wiring can essestially be hidden by the trim work.
