However, under Risks and Challenges on the same page:
This has been the killer for all other DVR systems other than Windows Media Center; at least those that want to work with CableCard systems. Presumably a big portion of the $100,000 goal is the Cable Labs certification process.

The 'protected content' aspect of it is what has me concerned. Currently I have a server running with 2 - Ceton 6 tuner cards. It works great, but I can't integrate or alter the UI too much. So, I've played with XBMC/Kodi on and off for a few years. That gives me the ability to mess with the UI...and cheaper extenders..., but I can't watch channels with a copy once DRM flag. And I really can't even consider asking my lovely ludite to watch TV on different devices depending on which channel...she just wants it to work the same in each room.
From what i understand protected content comes in 2 forms:
-DRM to protect the content producer (copy once flag - playready in WMC)
-Encryption to protect the content distributor (CableCard with OOB lock to provider)
I think they would have to strip DRM to allow me to play copy once channels on a RPi or similar. IDK...just really hope it works.

Personally here received a letter from local cable provider (many changes since then) stating that they were doing away with cable cards and integrating their stuff into STB's. I have a copy of the letter somewhere here. It's been a couple of years now.
Here have a MythTV box running; keeping it simple with two OTA HDHomerun devices, one legacy tuner and one satellite tuner. My favorite piece of the box is the skip commercial features. I am recording less these days as most of it is just junk and not worth watching. That said I do not watch regular television. I have mostly gone here to a la carte mode for my personal viewing of anything now.
Historically used two DTivo boxes and switched over to DTV DVRs for WAF only. That is her stuff and she uses it every day.
Just last week had it out with Fios as monthly now exceeds $200 and its mostly junk. I am thinking here of going back to satellite for just television (as it was left connected) and cable for internet and telephone. (house was configured (wired) for cable, fiber and satellite a few years back and its just switching around some cables).

Just FYI...I emailed SD (below)...a little disappointed now. Really wanted copy once in Kodi/XBMC.

I see that this will allow one to record protected content. Will it somehow allow distribution of channels flagged as copy once?
I am all in if i can get my copy once channels onto Kodi with this.
Also, will any of the Ceton tuners be supported in any way?

Hi Nicholas,
Copy-protected content will be supported within the home through the HDHomeRun client app for Windows, Mac, and Android.
We will be announcing the Kodi stretch goal on Monday, however that will be for copy-freely content only.
At this point in time we are not planning third party tuner support.
