home network problem

Chapter 10 not helpful.

I'll try Chapter 7 'Configuring Computer Sharing'.

I always use the 'Explore' function when opening the 'My Computer' window.

Right click on 'My Computer', choose 'Explore'. It should give you a list, in the left pane, of everything on your computer, including a line 'My Network Places'.

A little easier to get around the drives and network.

I'll post back after Chapter 7.

On the desktop, right click on the drive or folder that you want to share with the laptop. Choose 'Sharing and Security' from the shortcut menu.

Click the link to share the drive.

Click on permissions.

Book breaks down a little here - I'm working on an office PC, not home, so your options may be different than mine.

Book says 'Select the Share This Folder on the Network option.'

Then it says to 'Enter a name for the share."

Then 'Select the Allow Netowrk Users to Change My Files option.'

Click OK.

Basically, you have to tell the desktop that it's OK to share specific drives and/or folders. All subfolders within a drive will be shared similarly.

Further on in the chapter, there's a tip about sharing - you can't share Documents and Settings, Program Files, or Windows folders.

Which leads me to believe that you can't share an entire computer, just specific drives and/or folders.

Hope this helps.

I will read more. ANY problem can be solved, if you try hard enough. Any.

I think I got it.

Apparently, I needed to open the properties on the network card of the desktop and check the "file sharing box" Also It appears I needed to take control of the laptop's wireless card away from it's own sovereignty and turn it over to Windows to manage.

My God, I shoulda known that right away, don't you think? I don't know what's wrong with me. Never mind that I checked the "enable file sharing button" a couple dozen times while running their stupid wizards... I wonder what that did?

I dunno.... there sure seems to be a problem with something when you have all these wizards, they all do their thing and none of them notice that it doesn't work. ....I really think Microsoft needs a darn good neck wringing.... I'd certainly like to wring it at this point. Explaining what I've been through with this, there ain't a jury in the land would convict me.

I want to thank everyone who offered assistance with this.... You folks have alwys been knowlegeable and helpful... thanks a lot.

I have one more question concerning this... What exactly is the risk of having windows firewall disabled?

thanks again,
R.O. Man

If you're behind a standard router, the risk is very minimal - as in, only if something/someone gets on your network and tries to propogate (very few of these things exist). In a home, the risk is about nil - even in a corporate network with no PC firewalls, I've only seen a problem crop up once many years ago.

Biggest risk? The annoying nag screen - but you can turn that off in the SecurityCenter - I think it's under something labeled "Change how windows notifies me" - and you can set the firewall warnings off.
