What kind of air conditioner? What kinds of thermostat does it have now? Is this a window unit or a central air unit? How is the system controlled now?

We definitely need more details. Also, are you allowed to modify the air conditioner?

sorry for the late reply.and thanks for willing to help me..My supervisor will sponsor me a samsung window unit air conditioner (ASV24ESLN).. But i'm not sure about the thermostat currently but this model contain inverter. About my system, i'm using Intel Desktop Board D510MO,and i wil build a touchscreen for interfacing. Then i wish my desktop board can control the air cond directly..Is that possible for me to do that?

Thanks..

If you are allowed to, I would look at something like an ADI Ocelot. It can learn IR codes, and you can trigger them via the serial interface of the Ocelot. This will only work if the remote is IR, but the manual states you have to point the remote at the unit when controlling it, so chances are it is IR based, and not RF. If that doesn't work, you could always hack the remote and control the important buttons with a relay.

You can find a used Ocelot if you don't mind hanging around, and post a 'Wanted To Buy' in the classifieds section. As for hacking the remote, here are some tutorials which explain the concept:
