Hello,

I ordered an M1G and M1XEP, no keypad because I would like to test the system in my environment before investing in keypads, sensors, lighting interfaces, etc… I thought I might be able to use the “virtual” keypad in RP2 and M1XEP for my initial testing.

My M1XEP is on my network with an IP assigned by DHCP. I can reach the M1XEP webpage but it asks me for a code.

When I use the find "M1XEPs" in RP2 I see my M1XEP with the correct MAC. I enter my SMTP settings but the "Reboot", "Send", and "Receive" buttons remain grayed out in RP2.

Anything else to try before ordering a keypad for the “enroll” on page 4 of the manual?

When I switch between the computer and M1XEP do both the M1G and M1XEP need to be restarted?

You really need at least one keypad; there are certain things that can't be done even from virtual keypads - like clearing alert/alarms for instance (tried from eKeypad and it just wouldn't work). Also the software apps generally are assigned to clone an installed keypad - that's where they get their function buttons. If you don't want it installed elsewhere, just leave it in the closet with the M1.

Also keep in mind that your install isn't UL listed for fire without a keypad that's connected via firewire.

And just one more note - about once a year or so, when we go to disarm from one keypad, it takes our code and kinda locks up - doesn't stop the countdown. We have to walk to another keypad and reenter our code then it all clears up. If we only had a single keypad this would result in an alarm but luckily we can just walk to another around the corner... Not an option if you only have one keypad on your whole system.

Thank you for the quick response. This set up is just for testing. If the M1G is chosen then multiple keypads will be installed.

Hello,

I ordered an M1G and M1XEP, no keypad because I would like to test the system in my environment before investing in keypads, sensors, lighting interfaces, etc… I thought I might be able to use the “virtual” keypad in RP2 and M1XEP for my initial testing.

I can connect to my M1G with the serial cable to port 0 using RP2.

Thank you!

The reboot, send, and receive buttons will remain greyed out until you are connected to the panel via ElkRP. It sound as if you have already done it, at least once, but click the CONNECTION icon at the top of the page to list the connection methods - choose your method to connect to the M1 panel. Once this is done, go back to the XEP setup page, and the buttons should then be available. I didn't find this written anywhere, and it wasn't instantly apparent to me to do so, but after tinkering with it for a few minutes I was able to figure it out...

So you did not need to go through the “Enroll” process using a keypad to get communication between the M1G and the XEP?

I did enroll - yes. But I can still open RP2, select my account, and view the XEP setup w/o connecting to the panel. But as you say, those options are greyed out, until I actually establish a connection with the panel.
