IP Camera, motion sensors with ELK

Hi All,

I am about to run pre-wiring whole house with cat6 where the IP camera is going to be, my question: are any IP camera, motion sensors and window contacts compatible with ELK M1? or they are bound to ELK products? since I am prepared for next stage

Thanks in advance.
Regards

You can use just about any wired door or window contact or motion sensor with the M1 or any other alarm panel.  They are nothing more than switches that close (or open) when they are triggered.  Wireless sensors are a different story.  These are proprietary to the system they are designed for.  Elk has 3 different wireless receiver options that can work Honeywell 5800, GE or Elk's own wireless system.

The M1 doesn't do anything with the video output from a camera.  This is also true for most other alarm panels.  But if the camera also has outputs that activate when the camera senses motion, you can certainly connect those up to a zone input on the M1.  The camera may also have inputs that you can wire to the alarm panel to allow the alarm panel to trigger the camera. You should plan on an extra cable for this (e.g. 22/2 ro 22/4) if you want to use those features.

Elk used to have a camera integration with their old touchscreens, but they haven't really been on the market in about 2 years or so. Usually it's best to keep the video separate and then work any integration separately

I really wish they would introduce a new touchscreen of decent size (8"?) that would simply display a RTSP stream... keep my NVR setup separate, but be able to queue up video upon command (e.g. doorbell) would be really nice...

Hey Elk, are you listening?!? :)

The 3.5" they have now is terribly small!

I'm not familiar with the Paradox panels, but took a look at the data sheet and installation manuals.  Overall, I'd say the Elk M1 is a more flexible, expandable and more capable panel, especially if you want to do any kind of automation.

The motion detectors appear to be plain IR detectors, rather than dual-tech, which combine IR and microwave technology.  IR detectors tend to be more susceptible to false alarms, especially with pets.  My pick would be a Bosch Blue Line Gen 2 detector.

The TM50 touchpad looks nice.  The Elk's KPNAV touchpad is smaller and more primitive by comparison.

There are other folks here who can give you better recommendations than I can on the cameras and NVR.

Like anything it all depends what you are looking for and what you want.  I think 10 zones is pretty basic, at best. Also, I would check on the wireless. Does this support wireless sensors as well? You always will want to add more.

Personally, if it was me, I would upgrade the hardware as high as you would ever want, because that is cheap compared with the installation costs. Once you hit the limit of a panel, you have to remove the panel to replace it, which is expensive.  Pay a bit more for the hardware when its installed, and you'll be set for the future.

If your house was prewired for an alarm, I would use every zone. If your house wasn't wired, they will only want to install a few zones like the front door, because the labor is expensive, but chances are you will want many more zones, an that is where wireless comes in.

Thank you Ano,

As I am building a new house and about to pre-wire (hopefully I can finalize and get it done next week) as per suggested by helpful users in this forum. That is why I am collecting as much info as I can beforehand.
I am really sorry for silly questions.

Cheers

Hi Ral and all,

just to confirm :), does it means that with IP camera system I should get a completely separate system like Dahua or Das?
Thanks
