Lake House Automation

Hey all,

I just wanted to run this design by a few people and see if I'm on the right track. I've been asked by the brother in law to come up with a solution to monitor his lake house and to allow some remote functionality from his home (appx 2.5 hours away).

Since I am familiar with the HAI solutions, this is the hardware we'll be starting with. So base control will be provided by an Omni IIE (just don't need the power of a proII, but need the cat 5 for control).

His biggest concern as of right now is that he can keep an eye on his house, boat, dock etc, over the winter months. That part is easy for now. Probably going to go with some sort of IP enabled camera for that portion. The other big concerns are enabling remote operation of his dock de-icer pump (basically a pump that takes lake water from the bottom and circulates it up so things don't freeze directly around the dock itself. (FYI this is mid Missouri). We are also going for basic security/fire monitoring. Probabally not monitored but trying to come up with a solution for notification upon an event to him via email. Most likely running Snaplink full time from his full time home to capture status/send email as there is no dedicated machine at the lake... (Boy I wish that the Omni's had a way to send an email without external software!!!)

He does have internet access at the house but no hard line phone system due to the prevalence of cell phones. I may look at the new cellular communicator if we get to that point.

De-icer pump to be controlled by a 71A00-1 UPB Load control module. (Pump is 30 amp 1/2 hp motor). There is existing power to the dock, but no easy way of running additional wire, hense the UPB solution vs a relay setup controlled by the Omni. The 7100 being an indoor device, I'm thinking of trying to enclose it in some sort of weather tight NEMA enclosure (suggestions welcome). This will then control a GFI that the pump plugs into. If we ever get the option to run some additional wire down to the dock I may look at rigging up some water sensors on his boat lifts to make sure they stay out of the water (mount the sensors so they contact the lake if the lift lowers) and some water temp sensors to add more automation to the de-icer pump.

What obvious things am I missing?

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

Is your brother's name Paul?

I have a friend, named Paul, that was thinking about this same thing...he was also worried about the lake height.

Nope no Pauls in the family.... Just hoping that the UPB signals can make it to the dock (and trying to figure out why paying 150 bucks for what is essetially a relay is worth it?)
